Yet Another Meeting with Headmaster
Character(s): Damian Razem & Headmaster Cid
Location: Cid's office
Rating: PG for Damian's language
Open/Closed/Finished: Finished
Summary: Since the first - and the second! - attempts didn't work out, Damian tries to reason with Headmaster. The third time's the charm--and in this case, Damian wins. Headmaster acquiesces to Cadet Razem's request: if an off-worlder cadet has been enrolled in Garden for more than four Quarters, he or she may be permitted to take on smaller missions around the world.
After the first two meetings (one with Mikuru and Headmaster, the other with Ahki and Headmaster), Damian had been more than a little discouraged. He knew that he was in the right, that he and Ahki (as well as Luki, Toph, and Aang while they'd been around) were more than capable of holding their own on the field. They had the training, the know-how, the experience to properly represent SeeD in battle as well as in every other country in this slagging world.
The third time, the secretary had simply given him a smile - as if she predicted the outcome to end horribly - but Damian could only smirk at her in return. This time, he was going to WIN no matter the outcome. He wasn't a politician's son for nothing, after all.
He knocked on Headmaster's door and politely waited until he heard the all-too familiar, "Come in," from the other side.
Cautiously, Damian opened the door and saluted Headmaster Cid. "Good morning, Headmaster."
Cid rose from his seat, saluting Damian in return. "At ease, Cadet. Take a seat if you'd like."
Damian nodded, taking a seat opposite Cid's desk before he set down a thick manilla file onto Headmaster's desk. "I was thinking about what you told me, as well as Cadet Wayne and Cadet Asahina," He began, taking the time to speak slowly and calmly. "And sir, if you don't mind, I still disagree with what you said both times. I - as well as my other self and Asahina - have the skills to fight whenever possible."
Here, he paused, noticing the worry on Cid's face. "... But I also acquiesce to the fact that we cannot graduate. I'm sorry about last time, I thought Cadet Wayne would have been calmer than that."
"It's quite alright, Cadet Razem," Cid chuckled at the memory. Despite that rough meeting, it had resulted in Cid's new perception of off-worlder Cadets. Although Damian hadn't quite realized it at the time, the event had resulted in a new perspective for his Headmaster: that indeed, some of Garden's younger students could use preparation for this world in other fields besides the classroom.
Taking the manilla folder into his hands, Cid opened it and glanced curiously at the file. "May I ask why you brought this?"
"It's information," Damian replied, glancing up at his superior. "On all the younger Cadets we've had at this school since I enrolled here. Me, Luki, Aang, Toph Bei Fong, Dave Strider, John Egbert, Jade Harley, Rose Lalonde... everyone who's ever been under the proper graduation age. It took me a while to gather everything and condense it into a file, but..."
He paused here, realizing that his stalking open BBS posts (and quite possibly hacking into a few accounts to read some PMs) might be open grounds for yet another fatigue tour, but at this point, Damian wasn't against the idea.
"... but I think if you look through it, it should be enough to make you re-consider my proposal."
"The one about off-worlder Cadets receiving specialized training through internships, apprenticeships, and the occasional field mission?" Cid responded in turn, not even missing a beat as he carefully inspected the file on Damian Bilal Razem. "I've been thinking about it."
"Oh?"
Damian honestly hadn't thought Headmaster was considering it, let alone enough to actually maybe put it into place. "Is there any way we could compromise on it, then?"
Cid slowly nodded, closing the file and setting it down. He slid it in Damian's direction as he warmly responded, "I don't think I'll need this, Cadet Razem. If you truly believe that you'll get a better education on the field - or with an older, more experienced SeeD outside the classroom - then we might be able to work something out."
Frag, he was actually going to implement it?! Day sat there, unable to speak for what felt like forever as he processed the information. Not only did Headmaster NOT require his files, but he was also willing to talk about---
"What's the catch?" Damian asked, raising an eyebrow as he fiddled with the edges of the folder. "There's a trade-off in this, right?"
Cid sighed. (Damian really hadn't changed, especially when it came to negotiations of the political variety.) "...I do request that younger Cadets who request to be placed on the field or as an apprentice of some kind must have been enrolled in Garden for at least four Quarters if they're off-worlders. Cadets who have lived in our world the entire time, however, must wait until graduation at age 15."
As Damian sat up straighter, he pondered on this for a minute. That was about the same time that older Cadets got to graduate and leave Garden to go on missions and attempt to save this world in their own various ways... and considering Damian had wanted to join them so badly, he didn't have much of a choice in the matter because of his age.
A slow, genuine smile crept upon the younger Cadet's face as he nodded in agreement. "I think I can agree to this. And if we want to come back and continue classes... is that also possible?"
"Indeed," Headmaster nodded, returning the smile as he looked straight at Damian. "Until you're fifteen, you're still legally a Cadet here at Garden. I'll work out the details with your Sponsors, but... if you want to be placed somewhere on a Co-Ops mission, I'll see what I can work out with Commander Leonhart."
Damian rose to his feet, half-bowing before he remember just where he was.
"Thank you so much, Headmaster!" He beamed, practically grinning from ear to ear in a moment that felt out of character, even for him. "I'll see you later to talk out the details." As he turned to leave, he stopped in his tracks for a minute and glanced over his shoulder at Headmaster. "... And um, I'll try to make all of you proud."
Headmaster smiled, pushing up his glasses as he watched the younger Cadet turn to leave. "I look forward to it." The door slammed shut behind the boy - Cadet Razem's enthusiasm had been that contagious, it seemed - and Cid couldn't help sighing of relief as he returned to his paperwork.
As he began to write again, he mused to himself, "... though I must admit, he and the other children have already made us proud."
