Summary: Vriska and Nepeta get ready for the graduation ball.
Why was she doing this again? Equius had been the primary reason that Nepeta had gone to the graduation ball last time. There were too many fancy occasions in this place for her tastes, and she had been planning to just go out and enjoy the town today. Yet it seemed like Vriska had other plans for her and for some reason she wasn't putting up as much of a fuss as she thought she would.
She supposed that if she was going to go with Vriska that...it would be ok. She had long ago lost her fear of the spidertroll, and would open admit that she had become fond of her. Very fond. She had yet to realize herself just how fond but Vriska was a good friend and someone who was always fun to hang out with.
Still, she thought if maybe she could convince her to do something else...
"Why do we have to go?" It came out as a whine, "These things are always so boring and uptight!"
"Because I refuse to go by myself with you howling around the town!" She tugged a hairbrush through the cat troll's knotted mane of hair, keeping her in place else she wanted to lose a chunk of hair. While Vriska never tried to be overly responsible she knew that going to these events were "highly encouraged" for someone with her title.
"We can just walk in and hang around for a bit and then leave again, so stop complaining!" She was somewhat careful brushing around her horns. "Maybe after we can go do something else."
Nepeta winced a little as Vriska liberated her hair from its knots. She really should consider cutting it. After going this long without doing so it fell down to about her chest when it was actually properly managed. She could never really be bothered to take care of it which is why she always use to keep it so short. Then when Equius was around, he'd always rid it of all the leaves and twigs that got caught in it--the only form of physical affection he would allow himself to give her. That was why she started growing it out...but he was gone now. Yet she continued to keep it long, why, she did not know.
She made a small 'hmph' noise but didn't complain anymore. "Alright, alright. But only fur a little." She supposed congratulating the new graduates was in order. Considering she was going through it right now, she knew that it must be a great feeling to be up there, looking back on all the work they had done. She only had this and one more quarter to go actually, a thought that startled her.
"How long ago did you become a SeeD? What was it like?"
She smirked at the feeling of knots relaxing under her brushing, remembering how her hair used to be this bad. At least that was a nice perk to keeping her hair shorter- she had less to take care of. Of course she did miss her long mane, but every time she tried to grow it back out she just gave in and snipped it back to its shorter length. Maybe one day she'd go back to having long hair again.
"Mhm, little over a sweep now." Almost three years. Had she really been here that long? Her brush was moving through her hair faster now, less than a few knots left to conquer. "It was pretty great. No more tests or homework, just missions. I can see more of this world now than I could when I was a student. That was pretty sweet."
Over a sweep? Vriska did say she had been here about that long when she first came here...and it was only about two more months when it would be a whole year--half a sweep for herself.
Upon realizing that Nepeta too fell in a slight stay of shock. She had arrived here May--well, in the Gardens in May. In this world she had come in April, so it would be more like a month. Hard to believe, indeed.
"I can't wait to be able to go out too. This place can be so stifling sometimes."
"Yeah, that's why I graduated!" She snickered, finishing up with her hair and started with pulling it back with a small bow. Knowing her she'd just get it in her face and let it get gross again. Why she felt any need to help her with this she didn't let herself think about it. She was just being generous with her time! Nepeta was a very lucky troll.
"Alright there, done." At least she got her in her dress before she started on her hair. Vriska looked at her and tilted her head. "Pretty good if I do say so myself!"
Which had likely been a hassle. Nepeta paused to examine herself in the mirror. Vriska had done a surprisingly good job with her hair. It was a simple style, but it did look nice. The dress she wore was the same one she had worn the previous two dances but she was beginning to notice that it was getting a little small for her. That made her wrinkle her nose a little. She wasn't getting much taller but puberty continued on as ever. She put her hands on her waist, frowning a little but then gave a small shake of her head. It was still alright, and she thought she looked alright regardless.
"Thank you, Vwhiskers."
She slung an arm around Nepeta's shoulders and grinned into the mirror. "Gotta dress to impress, Leijon! Can't go to this sort of stuff looking like a flop, right?" She didn't wait for her to answer as she pulled away to go put on her heels.
"You're lucky you have me around to look after you! I'm pretty sure I'm the only one here that can make you look so good!"
Nepeta leaned into Vriska a little when she put her arm around her. "If not for you I wouldn't be going to this anyway." she pointed out, but her tone was light to show that she didn't really mind as much as she was saying.
"Are you sure about that? I dunno, I think Kananyaa could give you a run fur your money."
She didn't stop what she was doing and only snorted. "Yeah well, Fussy Fangs isn't here, is she?" Standing up to settle her feet into her shoes she sighed and looked to Nepeta.
"Why even bring her up now?"
The got Nepeta's smile to drop, and she looked at Vriska with a confused frown, wondering if she was joking or not. It certainly didn't sound like it, but why would she say that? "Huh?"
Vriska wasn't looking at her then and she walked off to look for a hair clip to keep a few bangs from falling in her face.
"Of course if you're talking about that older Maryam that was here a long time ago I guess she counts, I never did see her make anything, though so for all we know she just shared Fussy Fang's name..."
Nepeta followed Vriska closely. No, she wasn't joking. Nepeta knew her well enough now to be able to tell when she was pulling her leg or not. Or at least most of the time. "Um. No, Vriska. I'm talking about our Kanaya." She still hadn't quite put together what was going on though--Vriska wouldn't write Kanaya off like that, would she?
Finally she stopped and looked back at her, eyebrow raised. "Yeah, but she isn't here, Nepeta." Her smile fell into a frown. "Why are you being so adament about this?"
She looked at her, trying to decipher any hint as to why she was saying that before she simply decided to just go out and say it. "Yes, she is Vriska. She arrived here on Valentines. Remember?"
It was a slap to the face. Vriska turned away from her to head to the door. She wasn't going to deal with this right now.
"Let's go."
For a moment Nepeta considered pursuing the subject. She was certain Vriska had heard her, given her reaction and she weighed the options for a moment before deciding no. She would bring the subject up later, but she knew that Vriska was excited about today and she didn't want to ruin it further for her. She just gave a nod that was left unseen, and fell in step next to her. She hesitated for a moment before reaching forward to grab one of Vriska's hands, giving it a small squeeze before letting go.
"Hopefully no one spiked the punch bowl this time. Lets go have fun."
She kept her mouth shut and found herself thankful Nepeta did as well. It was so obvious there was no point in trying to deny it- but that wouldn't stop her from doing it nonetheless. So her memory wasn't as great as it was a sweep ago, so what? She just needed to keep better tabs on things... It was no big deal.
The squeeze Nepeta offered her brought a tightness to her throat, but she swallowed it down and found herself squeezing back befor letting go.
"I wouldn't be totally against the idea if they did."
Nepeta wasn't really much of a fan of alcohol, but hey. She gave Vriska a gentle elbow "Let's get something afterwards and invite Kanaya over. Have a sleepover or something, it would be fun! We could watch one of Karkitty's romcoms."
Her lips quirked up into a partial smirk. "That's assuming she'd even touch the shit." Yet she wasn't entirely dismissive of the idea. "But... maybe. I wanna pick the movie, though!"
"Alright, alright. He has a lot, I can't even list them all," She was glad to see her smiling again, "we'll drag her off once things get too boring to handle."
