Goodbye Dollet and Thanks for All the Fish! (backdated to Sept 28)

Summary: It's an excuse to pump dance music really really loudly, tbh.

The party was put together ridiculously fast, but everyone who decided to help went all out, and the place is pretty damn awesome. There are refreshments, strobe lights, a loudass music setup, and lots of space to dance. Come on in and have a blast! Garden will be sailing off in the morning, and then it's back to school. Time to get in that last hurrah!

"I'll just beat the crap out of you all if anyone ends up smashed who doesn't want to be." For all that she said this completely casually... well, Namur knew a bloodthirsty berserker lurked in the guise of an innocent girl here.

And he was totally okay with that. Everybody had their hidden devils. "Sheheheh ain't that the truth!" he laughed. "But seriously, y' tried that shit? Think it'll be pretty damn obvious it's more alcohol than punch, even t' them that's never had it before."

On the way back to the boombox the beat got a little too irresistible, and instead of his usual gait he began to slide glide across the floor.

Devil?! That was Maria's finest quality!

She wasn't about to join in, but she watched his little show with a hearty amount of amusement. Why a party like this was supposed to be fun, she would never understand, but she had to admit that for people who liked it, they certainly appeared to be having lots of fun indeed.

"Man, I'm thinkin' not a party girl's an understatement," Namur stopped gliding. "Beat don't get y' at all. Is there anythin' y' like t' do, outside a cuttin' shit up?"

"Fanatical rereading of old issues of Weapons Monthly." Maria could be very cheerful about what even she recognized was her own fanaticism to the cause of gunblades. "Reading in general... Most of my hangouts with friends are much lower-key affairs."

"Magazines an' books, huh? What kinds a books?" They had made it up to the front of the room, where the music system was set up. Namur pushed the chair over for Maria, and hunkered down in front of the system himself.

"Boombox ain't anythin' special. Got two decks t' work with 'stead a jus' one so all y' got t' do is make sure t' push pause on the one that ain't playin', else y'll get two songs playin' over top each other an' it takes a lot a talent I ain't got t' make that kind a shit sound good. Sheheheh!"

"I like studying history and politics. Or... well, I don't know if 'like' is really the proper term, but I think I have a duty to know a lot about the world, now that Garden is full of so many people who weren't born and raised on it like I was."

She took the seat, watching him work and nodding as she took note of what he was doing. Simple enough, she could handle this.

"Got t' represent," Namur nodded. "Know that feelin'. My people's been livin' in the deep for centuries, an' humans treat us like animals cuz a that. So it's important for those a us that make it t' the surface t' show 'em who we are, y' know? Maybe we're kind a scary, but that don't mean y' got t' be scared. That kind a shit. An' maybe someday it'll be safe 'nuff for more a us t' move up an' live in the sunlight without havin' t' fight all the time or worry 'bout bein' caught 'n' sold as slaves."

Wow, he hadn't really meant to bring all that up. His expression was somber for a moment, then he grabbed the notebook off the top of the boombox and showed Maria the list he'd had people make as they brought CDs to share or came with requests.

"So this here's the person's name an' the CD they want t' hear, and these're the numbers they want played. If the CD is theirs its circled with their name so they can get it back later. Cross out the numbers when y' play 'em, an' mix 'em up a little. Prob'ly won't get through all the requests but that's jus' how the current flows. If y' notice somethin's got a bunch a requests try t' make sure y' play it 'fore some a the others that ain't got as many. Priority or whatever. Got it?"

She knew Namur had hidden depths, but still, hearing him express stuff like that still just sounded weird when most of the time, he just came off like a guy with no troubles and a generally cheerful attitude. She nodded quietly to his explanations.

"Next time you do this, I'll try and have something a little more sophisticated for you. But I can handle this, no problem."

"Lemme guess," Namur grinned, resting his arm along the back of the chair and winking. "Y' got a specialization for that, right?"

"Computer science, of course," she said, not realizing he was being playful because, well, she DID have one for it. "It's just a matter of ripping the music and setting up a playlist. Easy stuff!"

Namur laughs from deep in his chest and scrubs his hand over the back of her head. "Yer a hell of a girl, Maria. Think I'll take y' up on that."

"Sure, I'm a hell of a girl except at parties." She matched his laugh with her own chuckle and an easy smile. "I'll have it ready for you soon, then. And in the meantime, you get out and enjoy yourself."

"Nah, even here," he said. "Y' coulda stayed givin' everybody the stinkeye over by the food. 'Stead, yer over here smilin' an' tellin' me t' get my ass out on the floor. Maybe it ain't yer scene, but yer takin' part in it anyway."

"Just call me a good sport about it all," she said with a grin. "Besides, you're so obviously having fun I couldn't stand to ruin it."

"A'ight, thanks for bein' a good sport 'bout it all" he smirked. "Next time, I'mma take y' somewhere fun y' want t' go. Deal?" Namur held out his hand in front of her.

"Are you kidding? I had a ton of fun on your exam, you know. This," she said, patting the CD player, "ought to be MY payback to you!"

Left hanging, high and dry. Damn.

"Naw, come on," Namur said. "Ain't got t' pay me back for shit that's got t' be done."

If Namur wanted a girl who was at all sensitive to flirtations, boy was he barking up the wrong tree...

"I still enjoyed it, though! I love missions in general!"

So he was beginning to see.

Or she was playing hard to get. Human women tended to play that particular game with fishmen more often than not. Namur's learned to be a sport about it.

"Kind a figured that," he rolled his eyes. "What's yer rank?"

"Low," she admitted grimly. "I haven't had the chance to DO all that many high-profile missions. Everything with Sol Invictus and the Mage and the political relations with Esthar and everybody hasn't been great for business."

Namur sat back on the table next to the boombox.

"Can y' go on higher ranked missions if y' got someone with y' that qualifies?" He might know a few people...

"Probably depends on the mission," she said with a dispirited shrug. "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't considering getting my Instructor's license for the rank jump... though that's only part of it."

"Be good if y' taught magic, or 'bout the GFs or history," Namur offered. "Taught me a hell of a lot, anyway. What's the other part?"

"Namur, are you kidding? The other part is gunblades! You know I'm the only SeeD who currently uses them, despite the fact that Commander Leonhart is the one who vanquished Ultimecia and saved the world with them?" She almost pounded one of the machines for emphasis, but fortunately stopped herself before she could. "It's a shame and a tragedy, that's what it is!"
