Summary: Espio and Ace have gone from developing a solid friendship to keeping their distance from one another, all because of an itty bit of badly-received flirting. After all, would someone who is 100% taken really be receptive to that kind of thing? Nope.

At least, not in theory.

It had been a pretty busy day, all things considered. Late in the evening, Espio found himself a corner of the library to sit on the floor and read a book in, eager to take his mind to a fantasy world far, far away from the stress of reality. He had far too much on his mind lately.

To begin with, he didn't know what to think about Garden's mobilisation, didn't want to think about the inevitable conflict with Sol Invictus, even though he knew that it was his duty as a SeeD and an Instructor to defend Balamb Garden. And yet, he knew that at any minute, Sol Invictus could catch up with them... he didn't want to think about it.

Then there were more personal issues - the lingering self-hatred and doubt, much as he tried to push it out of his mind, continued to crush him down.

And family?

Well, for the first time, Ace was the problem. Ace had never been a problem before - he liked Ace! Possibly a little too much, not that he'd admit it. And yet, ever since that party, he'd made an effort to avoid him. Their conversation, even almost two weeks later, still echoed in his mind.

He sighed. He couldn't concentrate on the page in front of him.

Ace had been mindful of the horn and after a moment he pulled away and returned to sitting at the foot of the bed. "Direct enough for you?"

Espio remained silent for a moment, before - voice much louder than intended - he snapped. "Don't just do that then run away!!"

Ace chuckled lightly and held out his hand. "Then maybe you should give chase?" He encouraged hoping the other would come to him this time. It was awkward to say the least...I mean Espio wasn't human. But honestly, Ace didn't care.

Almost by instinct, Espio reached and took the hand... but then seemed to realise what he was doing and scowled at Ace. "Why should I?" he asked, hoping that Ace would have a good answer.

"Because the best things in life are the ones you had to work a little extra for." Ace whispered gently tugging the other close so he could kiss him again.

Espio knew that was coming, but was still surprised by the tug and fell forwards. However, despite himself, despite stubbornly insisting to himself that this was absolutely off-limits, this time he leaned into the kiss receptively.

His heart was pounding and he felt like kicking himself, and yet...

Ace cupped his cheek and deepened their kiss. He let his eyes slip shut as he savored their connection for a moment longer then pulled back. "Wow."

Espio sat back against the wall next to Ace, folding his arms and frowning. "Don't 'wow' at me," he said, clearly only being snappy for the sake of it. "I - ugh. Give me a minute."

He slid off the edge of the bed, and started heading for his dorm's bathroom, picking something up on the way.

Ace chuckled lightly and watched him scamper away. Knowing he couldn't leave through the bathroom, Ace shifted so he could lean against the headboard of the bed and stretch out. He shifted, getting comfy and waited patiently. Honestly he couldn't believe Espio had let him kiss him, he figured that the other would either string him out forever or tell him to get lost and actually mean it. But this was so much better then either of those alternatives.

After a few minutes, there was a shout and some mild swearing, before Espio came back out... in human form, wearing only a pair of jeans. "Damn, thought I left more clothes in there than that..." he muttered, mostly to himself.

"Woah!" Ace said sitting up straight and taking in the human before him. It wasn't the first time he'd seen Espio like this, but it was the first time he'd seen him shirtless.

"You are a horrid tease." He hissed out as he stood and stalked over to him, hands taking a couple belt loops and pulling him close, kissing him again hard and passionately.

Espio let out a small yelp of surprise at being yanked forwards, and only allowed Ace to kiss him for a moment before he pushed him away. "What do you mean, tease?! I thought I was gonna stab you in the face as I was!" That, and the height difference was bugging him.

"You're human, you honestly expect me to behave when your human and your topless and sexy and...." He let it trail off before he was kissing him once more, deep and demanding while threading a hand in soft black hair, tilting his head just right and licking along his lips encouraging him to open.

This time, Espio was fully receptive, following the cues Ace gave him and kissing him in return. Barely aware of his actions, he wrapped his arms around the man's waist and pulled him close. As much as one part of his mind still protested that he shouldn't be doing this... he pushed those thoughts away.

For once, he'd accept what he wanted. If everything went wrong as a result... well, he would deal with that when the time came.

Besides, he was a pirate, wasn't he?

Ace gave a heady moan, it rumbled through his chest and he pulled Espio's hair harder as their kiss turned nearly savage before he pulled away. He was trembling...mostly with repressed desire. It wouldn't do to rush this no matter how much he wanted it. The desire he felt was plainly obvious against Espio's stomach but Ace would restrain himself, Well. He planned on trying at any rate.

"Fuck...." Ace panted eyes closed and forehead pressed against Espio's.

Espio took that moment to try and get his breath back, panting for a moment, mouth feeling dry. And that... oh, he'd felt that, and he didn't know what to think. "You..." he managed, then swallowed. "You... really are serious, aren't you?"

Ace pulled back and looked at him a moment before chuckling and then pecking his lips. "Do you honestly thing I would bring you flowers if I wasn't really interest in you?"

"I figured maybe it was for the challenge." Though, Ace won himself a slight headtilt, and a smile.

"I don't chase things I don't intend to catch." Ace teased lightly and it was very very true. Unless he deemed the prey worthy Ace didn't even bother going after it. He leaned in for one more kiss before he pulled back and sighed softly. "This is gonna be so hard....no pun intended."

That got a look of confusion from Espio. He thought he'd already been 'caught', so what would be so hard other than, well, the unintended pun that brought a tinge of red to his cheeks. "What will?"

"Not bending you over the bed and having my wicked way with you." Ace chuckled.

Ah. Espio took a step back, blush now completely undeniable. "Y-yes, I'd rather you didn't do that..." he stammered.

"Relax, I wont." Ace said running long fingers through Espio's soft hair. "So will you let me take you to dinner now?"

Espio just tilted his head with amusement. "Now, how do you plan to do that with the Garden airborne?" he asked.

"Fuck...I forgot about that...." Ace frowned. Honestly he had been so caught up in the moment that he had forgotten all about the impending war and the fact that they were on the run. Yeah...Espio seemed to do that too him.
