Summary: Who brought the shounen protagonist to a JRPG fight?

[The day wears on, the flood of monsters keeps coming - and, partway through the battle, without warning, Tears Point blazes a brilliant violet.

The harsh glow is just about visible from where Balamb Garden is stationed, but the battlefield is where it really cuts through, seemingly brighter than it has any right being. Only from the sky is it easy to make out any clearer details: the light forms a rough circle, and not a particularly large one for its intensity. A ten metre radius would be generous.

At the very heart of the action, you might just be able to spot a figure standing in the centre, engulfed in crackling light, surrounded and cut off by a preternaturally sudden roaring wind strong enough to shatter glass.

(Hardly daring to look, hardly daring to breathe, Ed lifts his hands to the cold stone of the Gate and pushes -)

After almost a minute, the glow dies, seemingly without a trace.
