Character(s): Katara (Dreamer), Rock (Viewer)
Location: Northern Water Tribe (dream version or whatever)
Rating: PG, maybe PG-13? (Some violence, but it's all just a lesson okay)
Open/Closed/Finished: Closed
Summary: Rock gets to experience a waterbending lesson via Katara's memories.
When you wake up, you're suddenly filled with an indescribably amount of rage that nearly consumes you. You're standing before what looks to be a council of nobility, all perched up on a dais in a throne room carved out of ice, but you have no time to marvel at the beauty of the interior. No, you're far too focused on glaring at the insufferable old jerk sitting pompously on the dais in front of you, his smug expression only adding fuel to your anger. The ice beneath your feet begin to crack, and the intricate ceramic vases situated on either side of the dais as ornate decorate suddenly explodes, splashing water everywhere. You don't realize that it's your anger that's causing all this destruction.
You jab a finger forward, pointing squarely at the elderly man who is the source of all your fury. "I'll be outside if you're man enough to fight me!" Your words are spoken full of conviction, and without waiting for a response you spin around and stomp off.
'Who does he think he is!' You think to yourself as you make your way down the countless steps leading down from the ice palace. 'As if I'd ever apologize to an insufferable old man like him! I've done nothing wrong-- and it's stupid that women can't bend and fight here! Why are the water tribes so sexist?!' But your thoughts are punctured when two males come up behind you, both sounding rather panicked.
"Are you crazy, Katara? You're not gonna win this fight!" Sokka speaks-- but you're pulling off the wool parka and promptly throwing it in his face to silence his warnings.
"I know! I don't care!" And you really don't-- it'll be more than enough for you if you can at least slap the old man across the face with a water whip. As you begin to imagine the millions of ways to manipulate the water to show Master Pakku just how stupid his traditions are, the other boy begins to speak.
"You don't have to do this for me. I can find another teacher." And while you know he's trying to placate you, trying to soothe you from your hellbent rage, it only adds to your mounting irritation.
"I'm not doing it for you! Someone needs to slap some sense into that guy!" You promptly turn around when you reach the bottom of the steps and your eyes lift to see Master Pakku making his way down the staircase calmly. You're pleased that he seems to have taken your challenge seriously.
"So, you've decided to show up?" You can't help the slight arrogance to your voice, almost a taunt-- but you feel your brows crinkle as the elderly man walks right past you, barely acknowledging your presence. "Aren't you gonna fight!"
Master Pakku doesn't even bother to turn around. "Go back to the healing huts with the other women where you belong."
Oh, he does not know who he's talking to.
You feel the fingers of your right hand curl and draw something from the ground-- the ice breaks just a bit, melting as it's drawn out under your control, thinning out to a whip. Without any hesitation, you snap the water whip right at the back of Pakku's head. That will get his attention!
And it does. There's a twinge of satisfaction when he finally turns to face you, and instinctively you dig your feet into the ground as he speaks, "Fine. You want to learn to fight so bad, study closely!"
Immediately you're on guard and begin to move as Master Pakku draws the water from the pools situated on either side of him. You're determined to take the offensive approach, running straight towards him-- as a blast of water is aimed at you, you launch yourself forward, kicking into the liquid to dissipate it. But it sends you into a backwards flip, where you land soundly on your knees. There's no time for you to think-- he's encircling the water around both he and yourself, tightening the barrier to force you to move in closer.
"Don't worry, I'm not going to hurt you!" Master Pakku reassures in a taunting tone, but you're too busy trying to keep steady on your feet to make a retort. Growing tired of this game of fancy footwork, you lash a hand out to slap the circle of water aside, disrupting Pakku's control of the element.
You're running at him again, and he forms a protective slope of ice that tapers off at the top-- that doesn't deter you. You run right over it, jumping off at the edge and landing on the ice banister of the staircase. Pakku melts the wall of ice and sends the wave directly towards you, and in an attempt to steel yourself, you shift your feet and will the ice to encase your ankles. The burst of water is deflected and you remain standing tall.
"You can't knock me down!" You declare, and you barely notice the cheering coming from the crowd behind you that your fight has gathered. Determined as ever, the ice around your feet breaks as you take off in a sprint towards the bending Master, and in an attempt to shield himself he draws up a sheet of ice. 'As if that'll stop me!, you think to yourself as a simple wave of your hand causes the barrier to liquefy. Your arms lash out in several calculated blows, all easily parried and countered by the elder. So engrossed in your barrage of attacks you don't notice the wave of water coming from the side, which promptly knocks you off your feet and into one of the large pools of water.
But you persevere. Resurfacing, you draw a pillar of ice up with your hands, then with slicing motions you send thin yet sharp blades of ice towards Master Pakku. As he breaks each one and marvels at a disk which narrowly misses him, you take the chance to get out of the pool, drawing out a large sphere of water to blast at Pakku. He easily manipulates it and forces it under his own control, and as you watch him bring a wave overhead you're sprinting forward, on the offense again. But you stop in your tracks as you notice the momentum of the water, and not fast enough to jump out of the way, it comes crashing down onto you, pushing you back.
'Come on Katara,' you think as you shift onto your knees, head bowed down as you regulate your breathing. 'Focus!'
It's as if that one thought sparks the fight in you again. You leap up, hands held high before you swipe them down, bringing the two towers of ice situated on either side of Pakku to tremble and tumble down. Before it can land on him, though, he dissipates them into snow, rendering her attack useless.
"Well, I'm impressed. You are an excellent waterbender." He drawls out.
"But you still won't teach me, will you?" Your reply has a bite to it, because you already know the answer.
"No."
An angry cry rips through your throat, and you're sending a rolling wave of ice along the floor at Pakku, who wills the ice beneath him to raise him high onto a pillar. The base of his pedestal is liquefied and he rides forward on it, and while you try to send a burst of water to knock him off, he freezes the attack and slides down while sending a forceful blast of ice that catches the back of your head. As you go down, you don't notice the necklace you wear loosening around you neck and falling off.
You prop yourself onto your arms, breathing heavily as you watch Pakku's next maneuver. It's ominous as he draws a large pillar of ice from the pool of water-- and when it fully rises, it breaks into a countless number of ice shards. Before your mind can register it, you realize he plans to aim them at you. You only react fast enough to bring your arms high to shield yourself as them come hurling towards you, but instead of piercing you as you expect, they simply lock you in place, your arms captured in between several of the shards and rendering you defenseless.
Silence.
'Humiliating!' You struggle against the confines of your temporary ice-prison, but it's no use. Master Pakku is already walking away, but not without commenting: "This fight is over."
Anger flares up inside of you, and for a fleeting moment you wish you could will your body temperature to melt the ice away. "Come back here! I'm not finished yet!"
"Yes, you are."
But he stops suddenly, crouching down to pick up something from the ground. "This is my necklace!" He exclaims in wonder, and your eyes narrow in confusion.
"No it's not, it's mine!" You protest, struggling against the ice shards once again. "Give it back!"
Master Pakku isn't listening, though. He's holding the silk of the necklace delicately, his eyes glassed over as he stares at the pendant dangling from it. "I made this sixty years ago, for the love of my life." The sentiment seems to melt the ice prison that Katara is captured in. "For Kana." You hear him whisper.
Your stomach drops, and a sort of horrified realization dawns over you. 'No...'
"My Gran-Gran was supposed to marry you?"
Slowly the setting fades out, first the crowd watching overhead, then the backdrop of the Ice palace, before finally the very setting surrounding you. The last thing your dream leaves you with is the image of Master Pakku, clutching your most prized possession.
