Summary: Unbeknownst to Katara, it's the night of the lunar eclipse-- and her body isn't responding well.

Katara, to put it lightly, was feeling horrible.

She wasn't sure what had happened to make her fall into such a state-- she had been perfectly fine just the day before, showing absolutely no symptoms of sickness. When she woke this morning, though, she couldn't even manage to muster enough energy to get out of bed, her body completely drained of energy. She'd grown up in the cold so the change in setting to the northern continent certainly couldn't have contributed to the change in her physical well-being. But at the moment, she was curled up in her bed with the covers drawn up to her chin, her body shivering with fever-chills and limbs aching from fatigue. But as tired as she was feeling and as much as she closed her eyes to try and rest herself to recover from her illness, sleep wouldn't claim her.

Katara shifted onto her side to try and find a more comfortable position, her hands drawing the blankets up over her head completely in a futile attempt to warm her freezing body.

She was going through her cycle, wasn't she? That had to be the reason for why she was so snippy with him, especially when yesterday she'd been fine, and the day before that and that.

Zuko watched her struggle for a moment and wordlessly stepped into the room, releasing the door to let it slide shut behind him. He'd decided that he'd stay another few minutes out of concern, maybe see if she needed anything. She was without a roommate, she was alone here in this room. He didn't want to leave her alone if something was wrong.

"I'll leave when I know for sure that you'll be alright on your own." The container of cold milk was set off to the side on a side table.

Woah, wait a second- who was the member of royalty here again? And who was the peasant?

About to demand just who did she think she was talking to, the words died on the tip of his tongue as he stared after her and watched her begin to sway. "Oh no you don't--" Zuko had lunged forward, an arm curled to catch her just in case her body did fall over entirely.

"Yeah, you're really fine, Katara," he growled under his breath, helping her stand, turning her around to face him. His hold tightened at how hot the blanket felt wrapped around her, brow knitting. He could almost feel her feverish skin through the thickness of the blanket. "You're burning up..."

He wasn't about to argue with her. Instead he gripped her upper arms through the blanket and concentrated the heat in his body to his palms, as he began to rub his hands up and down her arms to help warm her up.

"How long have you been like this?" His eyes searched her face, noting the light sheen of perspiration on her brow, the flush of fever on her cheeks.

"What? And you never thought to come and get me or Aang? You're alone in here, Katara--" But Zuko cut himself off, feeling oddly irritated that she hadn't sought them out to help her. Ever since this morning? That meant the entire day practically that she'd been ill in her room.

He continued with rubbing her arms, looking away to look towards her room, not noticing how she'd stepped closer.

"You should be in bed, not up and walking around."

The muscle in his cheek jumped in his irritation.

"Right. Blame me. Always the easiest thing to do," he muttered, rolling his eyes. He removed his hands from her arms and stepped back. "I'll let myself out, don't worry."

Again with the quick reflexes; Zuko's hands caught her at the waist, slender in his grasp, her body burning through her clothing beneath his palms. She seemed barely conscious, her body leaning towards him, her fingers digging into his biceps.

"Don't worry about it," he murmured back in return, his voice a quiet rasp of words. He said nothing more and shifted his weight from his right to his left foot, deciding that he was going to cart her back into her room himself, as he leaned down and curled an arm around behind her knees and swept her legs up from under her.

Zuko pulled her up into his arms, one wrapped around her shoulders, and stepped over the blanket, heading for her room, trying not to think about how little she seemed to weigh. As feverish as she felt, he could feel the tremors in her body, the way she shivered against him.

Of all the fucking--!

Zuko stopped dead just inside the bedroom the moment he felt her so boneless in his arms. He looked down at her, trying to peer at her. "Hey..." He jostled her somewhat in his arms. "Hey. Katara--"

But of course there was no response. Was her fever that bad?

He moved then to the bed and carefully lowered her down onto her back, leaving her side for a brief moment to retrieve the blanket in the common room. Zuko returned and dropped the blanket down over her, fixing it and tucking it in at the sides, making sure it was pulled up to her chin. He remained sitting on the edge of the bed, head turned towards her, watching her rest.

What was he supposed to do now? The kittens also needed tending to.

The exiled Fire Prince shifted on the edge to face her better, a knit in his brow. "You fainted is my guess." He leaned in towards her, hand lifting and reaching out to rest at her forehead. "You're still burning up. Hang on..."

And he pulled back, ready to rise from the bed and leave her side.

Surprised by the sudden grip at his wrist Zuko sat back down, eyes lowered to stare at where her fingers could barely wrap around. "I uh was going to get a cold cloth for your forehead." The words came out slowly, hesitantly, his gaze lifting to meet hers.

"And to run the milk down to my room for the cats. Uh- and to check on the chicobo."

Once her hand had fallen away from his wrist, Zuko had stood up. He'd turned to look down at her and then went still, blinking rather stupidly at the question. "...Yes, I'll come back," he answered slowly, feeling just as embarrassed for whatever reason. "I'll uh... I'll just take one of your keycards with me. I shouldn't be more than five minutes."

Zuko moved away from the edge of the bed only to stop and turn around again. "Uh. Where's one of your key cards?"

[identity profile] pyromatics.livejournal.com 2010-12-23 08:55 am (UTC)(link)
"...Right. Uh, five minutes. I'll be as fast as I can," he promised her, moving towards the table to snag up one of the keys and grab up the container of milk.

Zuko sent one last glance over his shoulder, noticing that she'd hidden herself beneath the blankets and said nothing about it, leaving the room and her. He set off in a brisk walk to his dormitory wing to take care of the kittens before anything else before seeing to the chicobo.

Should he go and find the Avatar? Maybe Katara would want Aang there with her and not him. They were friends, weren't they? Zuko felt that she'd probably feel more comfortable with Aang there at her bedside now with Toph and Sokka gone back home...

As promised, it'd only taken Zuko five minutes. He was a man of his word after all, a man of honor and such. Honor, of course, was a big thing to him and to the Fire Nation, something to be revered.

Zuko returned with two items; a potted plant of vibrant red, and the little chicobo sitting perched on the top of his head, nestled in the thick, shaggy hair. He'd left the milk with the kittens, covered and on the table where they hopefully wouldn't be able to reach it.

The door opened with a soft 'swoosh' and he re-entered her room, pressing the key lock behind him.

"Here..." He set the plant down on her nightstand, lips pressing together, his expression unreadable. Really - plants were a 'girl thing', he had no need for it in his room and figured she'd appreciate it more.
