Summary: Shadow had promised to show Maria the town once she got better.

Shadow sat beneath a tree near the girls dormitory, arms crossed behind his head as he waited for Maria to show up. Her health had gotten a lot better in comparison to when she first arrived, which was a relief to him. It seemed like the medicine in this world worked a lot better than their own.

His eyes were closed, focusing his other senses to detect movement around him. It was so much easier to hear the soft rustle of leaves or the chatter of passing cadets and SeeDs like this. His features twitched as he heard light footsteps approach him, knowing who they belonged to.

The weather was pretty nice as of late. It hardly changed in the Garden unless they relocated to a different region. However, it was the last thing on his mind. Being with Maria like this was something he dreamed of months ago.

"Are your classes going well so far?"

"Very well, I think. Some of the things are hard to understand, and it's all very different from the ARK."

She paused in thought, smiling brightly again.

"But.. I don't mind. It's a nice kind of challenge, and I'm learning things I've never even heard of before."

That was what he liked about the classes, as well. After all these years of merely surviving and being alive, learning in Balamb Garden was refreshing. Shadow could understand her enthusiasm.

"I felt that way, too."

As they stepped pass the entrance, the walk turned more scenic, and the buzz of the military school slowly faded. It would be a nice walk into town, and not very long.

"Do you miss ARK?"

"Sometimes," she said after a long pause. "I miss the ARK, my grandfather, all the scientists...

"But... I still have you. I'm happy about that. And this place is beautiful and safe... and I've only been feeling better the longer I stay here. I do miss the ARK, but this place feels like home. If I had to leave it, I'd miss it too."

The ARK was their home for a long time, and now, so was Balamb Garden. They may have only been so because Maria was there. Even after her death and being in ARK, it felt empty and cold.

"The ARK is still in space, and still functioning..." Shadow paused as well, frowning. "It's not home, though."

'Not anymore.'

"...No. Without everyone there, it's just a cold space station."

She squeezed his hand tightly, her eyes half-closing and Maria sighing softly but sadly.

"...But, that's why I'm glad I'm here."

Shadow gave a quiet nod, noticing her sigh. He returning the squeeze with a light, playful tug. "Same here."
