[Cid sits in his office, removing his glasses to rub at tired eyes. It's late, and this is the last appointment for the day ... he glances down at the paperwork on his desk. Bulla Brief, a young cadet from the new recruits, wants to speak to him about a new club?]

[Bulla smiles brightly and looks the Headmaster in the eyes when she enters the room. It's good to make a positive impression - especially when asking permission for something.]

Hello sir! Thanks for agreeing to meet with me.

[He nods and encourages her to have a seat with a wave of his hand.]

Of course. You seem like you're settling in well?

Yes, thanks! It was pretty weird to get used to at first, but I've been making friends and I found a totally cute dress for the welcoming ball.

[She has a seat a moment later, although a question occurs to her]

Did you want me to get you a coffee from the cafeteria after we're done with the meeting, by the way? It wouldn't be any trouble.

Oh, no, that won't be necessary. You're too kind, but you needn't go out of your way to ensure that I'll give you my fullest attention.

[Well, she certainly knew how to make a good impression. He smiled in a warm but teasing way, reminiscent of a father recognizing when a daughter was buttering him up for a big question.]

So, what is it?

Well, I was thinking...with this being a military school and there already being a training center...maybe a club for people to practice what they learned in self defense class would be a good idea. It could be like informal tournaments. I used to watch martial arts tournaments all the time because my dad and brother are great martial artists, so I know all the rules.

I figured that since there's no prize money or anything, it would encourage positive competition, and all the students who joined up could learn from each other.

A sparring club...?

[Intriguing, but it could be problematic. He looks like he'll need more convincing.]

[Putting in more effort into convincing the Headmaster this is a good idea is not a problem. Bulla's used to having to work at persuading people who are much less easygoing than him.]

SeeD doesn't always just fight monsters, right? Sparring club is a great way to develop good reaction time so when we have to fight a person instead of a monster, we won't hesitate. It's also a good way to get practice taking people down in ways that are effective but that won't kill or cause permanent harm.

I see...

Did you have a place in mind for this sparring club to take place?

[He's not entirely convinced yet, but Bulla's enthusiasm is ever-so-slowly winning him over.]

Such an event could possibly run the risk of injuring spectators.

I was thinking just outside of the Garden, and we'd mark off space for the fighting ring itself and ask that spectators stay at least fifteen feet from the ring.

As long as it's something people can't stumble across by accident and people stay a safe distance away, I don't think anyone would get hurt.

[Cid rubs the back of his neck thoughtfully.]

That's good. A member of the faculty would have to be present, of course, for the good of Garden and the students involved. If left unattended, I fear it would be far too easy for people to be tempted into injuring their sparring partners.

Would a SeeD count as a member of the faculty?

I was going to be the referee for the matches to make sure nothing gets too out of hand. Anyone who tries to continue the fight after their opponent is down for a count of ten, is out of the ring, or gives up gets kicked out of the club. Whoever is in the faculty can decide on any other punishments, but we definitely don't want mean spirited losers who just want to hurt people.

Yes, I suppose they would. But you might want the Commander's opinion on which SeeD to pick for the job.

... As for your choice of location... I can't help but think it would become inconvenient to have to constantly find new places every time Garden relocates.

Oh! Well, I was going to ask him about it after I got the okay from you, so that works out.

Do you have an idea for somewhere else that might work better?

What about the training center? A small area could be cleared for you.

That might work. Um, we wouldn't have to worry about the monsters, would we? A t-rexaur could kind of interrupt sparring.

[Cid chuckles at the thought.]

I imagine that would be one of the duties of your assigned SeeD.

[Bulla smiles brightly as she realizes that it's sounding more and more like the Headmaster is going to approve the club]

Oh good. It might keep us on our toes, but I think having somebody to take care of things would be better.

So, does this mean you'll approve the club? I promise I won't let you down!

Yes... I think so!

[Cid smiles an encouraging smile.]

Congratulations, you're the head of the... the what Committee, again? Sparring... or was it fight...

[He shakes his head.]

Oh dear. Well, whatever you come up with will be fine, I'm sure. We'll make arrangements within the week to have a space in the Training Center cleared for you.

[Bulla is positively beaming. She'd later be baffled that she started up a fight club before starting a fashion club, but this is what homesickness can do to a person.]

I think I'll call it Fight Club. Committee makes it sound like we're going to spend all our time sitting around talking about fighting instead of sparring and practicing.
