Better Lake Than Never

With the feast ended and the leftovers given proper homes in various places, Champloo left Garden with a smile on his face and a spring on his step. His destination, swiftly arrived-at, was Pinkie Pie's tent. Why she had chosen to camp outside all break was beyond his knowledge, but it didn't bother him -- she would do as she wished, and if it made her happy, he could ask for nothing more.

"Pinkie!" he called out, as he approached.

"I have simply been around for much longer," Champloo said with a smile as he drew the girl to him. "There are many things about which I have less knowledge than rice has capsaicin."

At being pulled closer, Pinkie hued at the closeness. It wasn't like any other time of her tackling down her friends or kidnapping someone to party with her or getting a piggyback ride. This was just her and her Special Someone. Alone. On a moonlit night. Never mind that fact that they're partially clothed.

So THIS was romance. Huh.

Smiling after what seemed like forever, Pinkie latched onto his arm, but his statement left her curious.

"What don't you know about?"

Well, it was certainly a very good start, at the least.

"There are many things I do not know about. For example, I do not know how to sew, or repair cars. Hyahya, in fact, most things that require specialty knowledge and cannot simply be punched, cooked, or intuited through with a good heart are beyond me."

"Don't worry! I can teach you some things, just like YOU can teach ME some things! Like...um..."

Pinkie wasn't much of a fighter, hence all the capoeira lessons. She knew not to operate heavy machinery, just the ones she designed herself. She knew how to cook.

".....You can teach me things!"

Yes, she would leave it just like that. For now, until she could think of things.

"Given what has happened between us already..."

He laced his fingers through hers, smiling.

"I think we are about to both learn a large number of new things together."

There went that stomach flippy-flop of butterflies again as Champloo laced their hands together. Of course Pinkie did likewise, squeezing his in reaction.

"You...think so?"

Pinkie hoped Twilight had a book on Special Someones. Or at least find something similar.

"I have no doubts! After all, have you ever had a Special Someone before?"

He knew the answer to that, of course; it was a teaching question.

"Weeeelllllll..."

Pinkie grinned. Of course he knew the answer to that question.

"Not like this!" She emphasized her point by giving his hand a light squeeze.

"That being the case," he said, squeezing back, "how could you not learn new things?"

"Since we learn new things everyday, then we'll learn a whole BUNCH of new things!" Pinkie bounced in place, creating quite a splash in the water. "I wonder what we'll learn next!"

"I, for one, have learned a valuable lesson about how pleasant it is to swim with you in the night. And it is quite a pleasant lesson indeed!"

Perhaps the truest statement of Champloo's appreciation for the girl was that when she bounced in the water, his smile came from the delight on her face and the happiness in her heart, and not on any effects the motions might have had on her anatomy.

Pinkie was clueless about any anatomy doing its natural job.

"And I learned that when we play water polo, you're on my team! And you have warm hands. Even though this water isn't that warm!" She tilted her head in confusion. "Why is that?"

"Perhaps centuries in the kitchen have caused me to absorb the ovens' heat!" Champloo suggested, only half-joke. "I do tend to run warm. Though I have served as a chef, a teacher, and an ingredient, I might be able to find work as a winter blanket in times of need!"

Pinkie nodded in agreement. "That would be a great idea to earn extra Gil in the winter months! Buuuuuuut you can only have one customer. Maybe TWO if Gummy needs warmth!"

Because the prospect of Champloo being someone else's blanket didn't sit right with her.

"And Gil means cakes!" Because why would she pay actual money?

"I am not so penniless that I need to resort to such an act yet!" he said with a laugh. "Though I am not rich, my salary here meets my modest needs. If it leaves enough to allow me to occasionally treat you to some entertainment, what more do I need?"

Pinkie shrugged after thinking about it, despite it being a rhetorical question. Which she..didn't pick up on. "We can make anything we need! Even a flying machine!"

That was on her next list of things to make.

"Well, I for one do not need a flying machine. As a cook, I rely more on a... frying machine!"

Pinkie's sense of humor may be rubbing off on him just a little.

Of course, Pinkie laughed at that, because that was good!

"Nice one!" Yes, someone else to enjoy her bad jokes and use them!

Who was corrupting who, Pinkie?!

Champloo, of course, laughed in turn, then without warning fell backwards into the water -- still holding Pinkie, of course. Surprise dunk!

Pinkie tried to fly away by waving her arms in a ridiculous fashion and went down with the ship. The splash was very big and loud. Luckily, the water was shallow, so they wouldn't drown. Unless Champloo didn't let go or the water really was deeper than they expected.

She sat up by pushing herself up, but...her hands were on Champloo's shoulders. She didn't realize it yet as she took in a breath of air.

And burst into a fit of laughter.

[Somewhere beneath her, Champloo is getting his feet under him... to lift triumphantly up out of the water! And if Pinkie gets lifted with him, well that's her luck!]

There went those arms waving again. Pinkie gripped onto his shoulder and wrapped her legs around his waist in fear of falling over.

"Oh, are you okay, Chammy?!"

"It will take more strikes with a tenderize to soften this steak!" he said, all manly and rugged. "You are the lightest of dishes!"

Relieved, Pinkie grinned before ruffling his hair playfully. "Like whipped cream and blueberries?!"

"You certainly take no more effort to lift!" he said. He would demonstrate, but perhaps obviously, he had no particular desire to unwind her. "Of course, the Netherworld runs heavily on lifting, so it is perhaps not a surprise that I should find it easy."
