Now that I see you

Characters: Rapunzel and Eugene

Summary: Eugene tries to cheer Rapunzel up so he decides to take her out on a date. Backdated~

[Rapunzel couldn't help but be a little curious and excited when Eugene asked her if she wanted to go out. Where exactly, she wasn't sure, but that did not matter. What mattered was she got to spend time with him. Just the two of them. Not that she minded Pascal tagging along, but sometimes it was nice to just be alone with him. She sat at her bed and brushed her hair, preparing to braid it so it was out of the way. Luckily, she was nearly finished brushing it now so she wouldn't be too much longer. It was getting hard to concentrate on getting ready, when she was so excited and eager to find out what they would be doing. She looked at Pascal watching her, sitting on her lap and frowning up at her, the same purple shade as her dress.]

I know, Pascal, but it's not like I leave you here with Flynn that often. I'd love you to come too, but I'm sure we won't be out too late. And Eugene will be with me, so I'll be fine. Really. I need you to stay here and keep an eye on Flynn, okay?

[ Eugene opens the door to his and Rapunzel's quarters, Flynnigan dashing in before the door is even halfway open. ] Okay. Flynn's been fed and gone outside, so that means we're free to stay out an extra hour. [ He looks at Pascal, all purple on Rapunzel's lap. ] I take it that a certain chameleon isn't happy about being left behind...

[She looks up when Eugene returns, giving a small smile while Pascal just turns to glare at him. Great, that meant they would probably be out even longer.] Oh, that's good. Pascal just feels left out sometimes, is all. But I've tried to reassure him and cheer him up. We won't be out all night, Pascal. And I'm sure Flynn will behave, especially since Eugene took him outside. [She tries to reassure her pet, as she starts braiding her hair.]

[ Eugene just gives Pascal a shrug of the shoulders and a 'hey what can I do' kinda expression. Noncommittal. ] Hey, you get her all to yourself half the time, buddy. You have to learn to share the beautiful princess with everyone else. [ Flynnigan yips, as if in agreement. ]

[Pascal just. Pretty much linefaces at Eugene, poking his tongue out. But it is true. Most of the time he is with Rapunzel, at her shoulder during classes or when she is in the infirmary.] Come on, Pascal. It won't be for too long. Maybe I'll find something to bring back for you if I see anything you might like. It's not that I don't want you to come or that I'm mad with you, you know that. It's just...nice to have some time with just Eugene. [Still braiding, getting quicker with it the more practice she gets.]

[ Eugene crouches down and puts out a hand for Pascal to climb onto. ]

C'mon, buddy. It's only tonight. You're going to have to get used to these kinds of things, because I plan to take Rapunzel out on more dates later on.

[And Pascal doesn't seem too enthused with that idea, but he is coming to accept that Rapunzel cares about Eugene a lot and being with him cheers her up and keeps her happy. Somehow. So he will climb to Eugene's hand and give a look of reluctant acceptance as Rapunzel finishes her braid.]]

I'd like that. So, we're pretty much ready then?

[ Flynnigan hops up on Rapunzel's bed, curling up on the pillow. ] More or less. Do you want to take a coat? [ He doesn't really know how cold the weather outside will be for Rapunzel, since all he needs really to stay warm is a good sweater and long pants, but he knows that temperature varies for different people.

Although... Rapunzel could just wrap up in her hair if it gets too chilly for her. ]

[She considers the question. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea, given she is still more prone to feeling the cold after spending most of her life inside. Rapunzel gives a nod, petting Flynn before standing and getting a coat from the wardrobe.]

What about you? You'll be okay? [Because if he was fine as he was, that was pretty much it for their preparations.]

Yea, I'll be all right, Rapunzel. I've got a long sleeve under this jacket. [ But just in case, he checks to make sure he has a pair of mittens. ]

Okay then. Let's get going! I'll see you later tonight, Pascal, okay? [She reassures him as she puts the coat on and gives him a last wave, smiling to Eugene and taking his arm. She'll let him take the lead for now.]

See you later, buddies! [ He gives Pascal a nudge with his index finger and then scratches behind Flynn's ears. ] No eating each other! [ He takes Rapunzel's hand into his arm and guides her out of the room, shutting and locking the door behind them. ] All right, [ He puts away the keys in his jacket pocket and zips it shut. ] We've got the whole night to ourselves.

[Rapunzel waves goodbye as they head out the door, giving an excited smile as the door is locked.] I know! Where did we want to go? [Even after all this time, she couldn't help getting excited about seemingly small things like this, simply going out with him. But given the first eighteen years she never left her tower, it was perhaps understandable she was still and probably always would be elated with such freedom here.]

[ He takes her down the hall. ] Remember when we went to that bookshop in Corona, you found that book with the maps and stars?

Oh, yes! The bookshop was amazing! There were so many -- and that man was so nice to let us in and look through them for so long. But, I guess any map and stars here would be different than the ones back home that I charted in the tower....

[And then a possibility dawns on her.] Are we going to see the stars here?

[ Eugene puts a finger to his lip. ] Shh. I worked really hard to put this all together, so no spoilers, okay?

Okay then. [She just smiles, seeming more amused than annoyed at the secrecy, getting more excited as she walked with him as she wondered where they were going and what he had planned and set up.]

[ He takes her outside, past the dormitories. They're starting on a moonlit path with the flora of Garden surrounding them on either sides. Though he is wearing gloves, he tangles his fingers with Rapunzel's, holding her hand as they walk. ]

[Rapunzel takes his hand in hers when he reaches for hers, her head leaning a little into his arm as she turns and looks at the flowers. They really did look different in the moonlight than when she generally saw them by day. It was still pretty, of course, but in a more subtle and muted way, she thought. It would be neat to try and paint them in this light later at some point, Rapunzel mused, following alongside Eugene as they walked.]

[ Eugene watches Rapunzel's awe out of the corner of his awe, smiling. He is careful to not interrupt her wonderment, only putting out a hand here to guide her down one path to another, weaving in and out of the walkways and heading towards the ocean view. ]

You're thinking about pain, aren't you?

Oh, yeah. This lighting....it's so different from the sunlight from the skylight in the tower back home. The colours would be fun to try and mix.

[Instinctively following along with him, turning her gaze back to him with a small, almost apologetic smile at the question. But it was a measure of how well he understood her that he could tell she had been thinking about painting.]

I think there's a couple dozen books on painting and mixing colors in the library. And since we got you that paint last break, you'll have enough to get the results you want. [ He just shakes his head with a smile and continues to walk. The ocean view is beautiful, but it's not the venue that Eugene has in mind for his and Rapunzel's official date.

He takes her past four more buildings before arriving at one particular building near the edge of Balamb. Right there on the building is a ladder, which Eugene gestures to Rapunzel. ]

After you.

Really? I'll have to have a look at them sometime then! [Because this sounds like an awesome idea. Even if it is probably not the one he had in mind originally when he brought her here like this. She looks to the ocean, remembering Gothel mentioning it to her earlier. She pauses at the ladder, giving him a look and raising her eyebrow before climbing up, relieved she had done her hair before this.]

Trust me on this, Blondie.

[ He starts up the ladder after her, taking time to admire how well shaped his girlfriend's hindquarters are -- oh like you wouldn't. ]

All the way to the top, and no looking down.

I don't think heights have ever really been an issue for me, you know. [Really, was there somewhere to stop on the ladder besides the top? Rapunzel was quite used to heights, having grown up in the tower and all, so she had no issues in terms of fear of falling as she climbed, resisting the urge to look down even as he told her not to. Oblivious to his staring as she made it to the top and hoisted herself up, looking around briefly before turning to help him up.]

It's just an expression, Blondie. [ When he gets to the top with her, he outstretches an arm to his masterpiece. ]

Say "hello" to our moonlit getaway!

[ He'd laid out a checkered blanket against the wall facing the edge of the building best viewing the moon up above. There were candles, two pillows, an extra blanket, and a picnic basket with food that Eugene had prepared yesterday night and this morning for the date specifically. ]

What do you think?

Oh. I just never heard it before. [She shrugs, turning to look when he manages to climb up with her.]

It's great. Really. [She never expected this, and can't help but admire it and smile at his efforts. It looked lovely, cozy. Rapunzel reaches for his hand and goes to sit on the blanket.]

Glad you think so. [ He takes her hand and seats himself beside her. Putting an arm around her, he pulls her close, tucking her beneath his chin. ]

I've also got an astronomy book and a little telescope in the basket so we can look at the constellations. [ He knows that it's something she's wanted to do ever since she first saw the star book in the castle town's bookshop. ]

Really? [That sounds brilliant! Rapunzel had always been interested in the stars and the sky after trying to figure out what the lanterns were when she first saw them, charting the stars and figuring out they weren't stars as she had thought. As Mother Gothel had thought. Still, she can't help but smile at the idea and the thought that Eugene had put into this.]

This is great. You even brought a blanket out in case we get cold.

It's nothing. I thought it'd be better to get you a blanket than to have you wrap up in your hair, not that it's not warm enough as it is.

[ He holds her close and leans forwards with an outstretched arm. He takes the whicker picnic basket by hand and opens it. Inside, is a silver, mini telescope that he'd gotten for Rapunzel the last time they were on land. ]

I've got some paper and pencils if you want to do some sketching.

Well, yeah, I guess a blanket is better. Not that I haven't done that before anyway.

[She smiles as she snuggles against him, head on his shoulder as she shifts slightly to admire the telescope.]

It's lovely. I had one back home I used to chart the stars, but this one is even better, Eugene.

[ He digs into the basket and pulls out some graphite pencils and plain sketching paper. ]

We'll have to make another chart book here since your other chart book is all the way back home. The constellations might not match up, since we're in a whole other world and all, but I figure that since we might be here a while longer, you could pass the time.

I guess it will be different from charting the stars on the ceiling of the tower. But if we are in a different world, I'm sure the constellations would be different. It could be neat to learn about the ones here.

[She approves, giving him a smile as he gets out some pencils and paper.]
