Continuum Shift [FINISHED]

Who: Jin, Tsubaki & You
Rating: E for everyone, now R for Racism
Where: Near the Balamb Garden Registration Office
Summary: Having just recently been admitted to Garden, Jin and Tsubaki still reel from the unlikely circumstances they find to them. Walking to their newly assigned dorms, the two talk between themselves as the situation begins to settle.
Special Note: Opening post is jointly written by myself and [personal profile] cryingcamellia

Jin Kisaragi stepped out from the admissions office of Balamb Garden, green eyes scanning his acceptance letter with rapt attention. Everything seemed to be in order and expected there, newly issued school uniform hanging casually in its tote on his other arm. With his sponsorship, dorm and class schedule lined up it appeared the Kisaragi heir had little else to do but appreciate the fact that he was now fully enrolled into his unexpected new life.

Assuming, that is, he could really accept such a ridiculous prospect.

"This all still seems unbelievable, doesn't it?" The cadet speaks quietly aside to his redheaded companion and fellow enrolled as he begins to walk, mentally evaluating the many difference in the Garden's design than that of Torifune's as the a polished slate of marble passed beneath an east saunter, "Time compression, stealing people at random. A world without Ars Magus, entirely different magic systems to learn.." He spoke about these things as if they were the troublesome problems of somebody else, but a note of interest in new challenges might be gleaned from his pessimism. "I presume you got your sponsorship, Tsubaki?" His eyes casually lifted to her confirmation letter, though he did not dare read it without permission.

Although the brilliantly red-headed young woman didn't look like she was being possessive of her acceptance letter. She mostly just looked deep in thought. But while Jin treated this new enrollment with stoic calmness, her words were more... carefully chosen.

"...Hm? Oh, yes, it seems I did," She says, as if she had had any doubt. "I'm not sure if that's uncommon or not, though. It wasn't a very difficult interview."

But she sounds distracted. She folds her arms politely across each other, with her new uniform hung over one arm and her acceptance letter and dorm assignments in the other. And though she may try to hide it, there's something in her voice she can't quite hide--A hint of worry. Uneasiness. "...It is unbelievable. I don't think it's really settled in yet. Time compression, strange worlds... And it happened so quickly, too. If we hadn't worked late that night, would we have just avoided this? Was it really just us being at the wrong place at the wrong time? It seems..."

Unfair would have been an impolite word.

"...Still hard to believe, still."

"I thought it was some kind of illusion ars at first." Jin admitted, having no particular comment for how rigorous or not Balamb's interview process was, "But it would've had to have been an extremely skilled user to lay one down without my noticing." Some part of him wonders if that might not still be the case, and he wandered like a fool in a prison he did not recognize, "But it seems we can't depend on the simplest explanation here. I suppose we'll have to make do. But..." He sighed, "I'd say you shouldn't have stayed late to help me, but I don't imagine that would have stopped you. I'm just glad you weren't by yourself." And as far as people to share such an odd experience with, Tsubaki was the only one he would've picked.

"I suppose we'll need to look into come clubs to join. I wonder if there's a student council.." Already, Jin's mind was keen on the path to influence and power, ever the Kisaragi.

"I'm sure you /would/ have noticed something," Tsubaki replies--The sort of natural compliment that came so easily to her. It certainly helped that she was confident that Jin was very good at quite a lot of things. "But I've never heard of an Ars this elaborate, this detailed, or to a scale like this. So as unbelievable as it all is... I suppose it must be real."

Though she doesn't sound happy to admit it. It would have been a great deal easier to understand--If not deeply embarrassing--if this could be explained by some sort of malicious trick. But as she lifts her gaze to the halls of Balamb--the unfamiliar corridor they walk down, and the odd architecture they pass--the fact that this is real enough seems hard to deny.

But clubs? How well-timed. That mundane question pulls her attention away from those rather sadder thoughts.

"Oh, you're right! And I didn't even bring that up. I should have asked. This place seems a little like the Academy, but I don't want to assume anything. Do you think they even have clubs here? We really should find someone to ask."

As if by miraculous timing, someone came by at that very moment!

That someone was a pastel-blue pony with a rainbow mane, trotting down the hall like she belonged here -- which, in fact, she did, if the bags full of books slung over her back were any judge.

"Hi!" she said brightly to the two as she approached. Hey, she was in a good mood, why NOT be friendly?

You know, it's a shame. There are many worlds full of young women who would be charmed--if confused--to be addressed by a talking pony.

But alas, this one comes from a world where horses have been extinct for a hundred years.

Tsubaki comes to an abrupt stop at the pony's casual greeting, half because it talked, and half because she is not really sure what she is really looking at. There are horses in some dramas. In the old stories, of the world before. But they didn't look like this, and they probably didn't look like historical horses, either. That's too bad, because Jin doesn't stop. He continues on as if nothing happened, and the red-haired heiress is left conflicted--He's still talking to her. And walking. She starts to move to follow. Stops.

Is it an animal? It has books! Maybe someone was being unkind to an animal? But it was talking. And look, Jin just...

"...Hello," Tsubaki says, in a voice half bewildered and half the sort of tone you'd use for a pet. The sound of a woman hedging her bets. "Well, aren't you a... well, a pretty looking..." Something?!

She finally finds her momentum--forward, apparently--and continues after Jin, with a protesting, "J-jin-niisama, don't get ahead of me! You don't know where you're going, after all, and..." And it's awkward being confused by yourself?!

Well, at least ONE of them is friendly-- was Rainbow's thought right up until that 'pretty-looking' remark. She froze in shock and alarm for all of a moment, then, with a deep scowl on her face, spread her wings -- then zipped back in front of the pair with a noise vaguely like a jet.

"Okay, you two may be new here," she said darkly, "so I'm gonna cut you a little slack and give you a clue. "I'm a pony. I'm from Equestria, where we ponies come from. We're every bit as smart and capable and normal as humans, and there's more than just me here, so you better get adjusted to the facts real quick. I'm not a pretty pet and it's rude to ignore!

"Now let's try that again," she said, then abruptly took off down the hall, back in the direction she'd come from.

A moment passed, then she came trotting back down, looking fixedly at the pair of them. "Hi there," she said.

The pony lands before them, hard, and Tsubaki comes to another abrupt stop. But then it starts to talk. Or, more accurately, to explain its sudden and powerful offense.

...Oh no.

...Oh, no, no, no.

She starts out looking surprised, and then it's all south from there. She grows a little pale. She looks profoundly uncomfortable. She holds her tongue only because it would be extraordinarily rude to interrupt in the middle of the pony's justified self-defense. She lets her finish, even though she is plainly mortified by the end of it.

And then the pony flies off.

Jin's calm explanation, the knowing look he shoots her--These are calm, level-headed, unflappable. They do not help her in the least, as she puts one (still burdened) hand to a temple, with a faint, "...Like beastkin. Oh dear. And I just... I just called her..."

When she comes back, levels a stare at them, and says HI THERE the scenario dictates that she should say "Hello" and pretend that that exchange a moment ago didn't happen. Jin does! But Tsubaki doesn't, because the moment Jin is done, she opens her mouth and it all pours out, with all the solemn, eloquent, heavy-hearted dignity that Not Being Racist entails:

"I am so very, very sorry. I am deeply sorry for any offense. I could say that there are no ponies from where I come from, but blaming what I said on my ignorance would be irresponsible. I assumed when I had no justification to do so, and I am very sorry."

Maybe when she's done being horrified she'll remember to introduce herself.

Rainbow Dash glared at them for just a moment longer, then softened out of a sense of mild guilt and self-reproach she'd never admit to.

"Just so long as it doesn't happen again," she said. "Humans just always see us ponies as animals or something and after the tenth time or so, you get really sick of it."

She ran a hoof through the back of her mane awkwardly, then decided the proper thing to do was to pretend none of this awkwardness ever happened. "So you just got here, huh? Well, welcome aboard. I'm Rainbow Dash!"

[personal profile] cryingcamellia 2012-07-13 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"It absolutely will not," Tsubaki replies with the firmness of one determined to prove herself better than her mistakes. But how it grates on her--She's not even been a full-and-approved student for an hour, and she's already offending other students? She'll have to make it up later.

But even as she says so, she catches Jin's glance back at her and his faint little smile. And as rare as those smiles are... Is he amused by this? She shoots him an unamused look. But between that and Jin's prompting, at least she stops apologizing long enough to introduce herself.

"Right. Then it'd be best to just start over from the beginning. As he said, my name is Tsubaki Yayoi. It's a pleasure to meet you, Rainbow Dash." She says, with the sort of polite dignity one would give to someone not named after the weather. "And this is--maybe obviously, at this point--our first day, in fact. Have you been a student here very long?"
elementofloyalty: (let's get to it)

"Oh, I can help you with that," Rainbow said, pointing down the hall with a hoof. "Follow me, I'll take you there."

So saying, the pony spread her wings and lifted into the air as naturally as a human might take a step forward. "I've been here a few months," she said over her shoulder as she led the way at a walking pace. "On my second quarter now."

Apparently, all was forgiven? Dash was quick to anger but quick to cool down, too, at least without further cause.

Good. See? It's amazing what one sharp look can do. Had Jin insisted that they could find their way alone, Tsubaki would have had to make a great big deal about how they had already been rude and that they were obligated to do better. But see? One look and we're all spared.

"Thank you very much for your help, then! We appreciate it," Tsubaki says, because /we/ certainly do, now. Sorry, Jin. "Though I hope you weren't in the middle of anything when we ran into you. We're not keeping you from something else, are we?"

But Rainbow mentions her second semester and, before Tsubaki can think about it, that thought makes Jin realizes something.

"...I hadn't even thought of that," she says, sounding a bit surprised as she thinks through it, "But you're right. We're starting at the same time, so we'll have the same classes. That /is/ a little odd, but... I suppose it has to be that way, since everyone arrives here in such a disorganized way. Oh, that's interesting! We've never been in the same class before, Jin-niisama."

That shouldn't be that interesting. But for whatever reason, it seems to cheer her up considerably.

"Naw, I was just heading to the quad. It's cool." It wasn't worth making a big deal over anyway...

"You can have classes together if you like, but you can take any of the classes in any order unless they have prerequisites! And most of the compulsory classes don't. So it all depends on what you want to study. I'm doing Piloting, and Ranged Weapons, myself!"

[personal profile] cryingcamellia 2012-07-23 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
"Piloting and ranged weapons... That does sound interesting," Tsubaki says--Completely sincere, even though she privately wonders why someone who could fly already would study piloting. Perhaps the technique crossed over? "Though nothing I'm personally familiar with, I'm afraid. Hm. At our academy, we didn't really /choose/ our classes, either... I'll have to give it some thought. I've barely even had a chance to look at the classes so far. It's the first thing I plan to do when I find my room, honestly."

"It's just a novel situation," She says, dismissing the whole topic. She was younger than Jin, so they hadn't had the opportunity to take classes together. It wasn't that big a deal, right?

Besides, whatever little silly enthusiasm she had pales a little at Jin's two matter-of-fact comments. Her voice is a touch softer when she speaks again. "That's practical, of course. A world without Ars is strange enough. But..."

"...New roommates. Yes, that's right, isn't it." She says, a note of sadness on her voice. "...There really will be a great deal to get used to here."
elementofloyalty: (rainbow awesome dash)

[personal profile] elementofloyalty 2012-07-23 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Simple, really: Rainbow studies piloting because she has to be the best in the air.

"Don't worry about roommates, most people here are okay. And sometimes if there's open space you don't have one. I don't right now... though that might be because I put a cloud in the room to sleep on and there's not much space," she admitted. "You probably ought to get the magic classes out of the way first. You know, paramagic and Guardian Forces. I still don't know if I entirely understand it... I'm not SUPPOSED to be using magic, I'm a pegasus."
