Characters: Ace, Marco, Thatch, Grell, Espio, Toby, Namur, Open
Location: Quad, Marco/Grell's room, who knows where else.
Rating: PG +, never can tell with this family
Summary: Ace just arrived and needs to meet the rest of his wonderful family. That includes the rest of Garden too.
It had been a few crazy days to say the least. Ace had gone from a near death experience to being dragged through time and space to a completely new place unrelated to his own world. After take a few days to get rested up, learn the ropes of Garden, and enroll in classes he finally felt as though he could hold his own here.
So here he stood outside of his room waiting patiently for Marco to come along and get him. The blond had asked him to meet up with him so he could introduce him to the rest of the family. Ace had to admit it. He was curious about Marco's child. What would he be like and would he accept Ace as his uncle? He took a deep breath and leaned against the wall. Marco sure as hell better hurry up before he got bored of waiting and wandered off.

"Thanks, Namur." He whispered lightly, closing his red, sore eyes and leaning against the fishman again. He sat there watching the sun starting to set and realized how late it was getting. "We should head back. Before the others start to worry."

Also if anyone was going to worry, they'd already be doing it, and a few more minutes wouldn't make too much of a difference.

It wasn't long after that thought, that Ace fell asleep. His breathing was soft as the emotional upheaval he had experienced in the past few hours finally took its toll on him.

"What's wrong, dear?" It was in the evening, and Marco, being the bird that he was, was snoozing already. "You look quite gloomy."

It was a relatively short walk to their room, where Marco has made a nest of sorts from their blankets and pillows. He looked too cute to disturb, but knew marco wouldn't mind being woken up for family.
"Marco, you have company."

Although somewhere in the back of his bird brain he realized too that he was grateful that Ace hadn't just tried to sneak into the bed with them, between Marco's bird reflexes set on "kick" for anyone except Thatch and Toby, and Grell being a shinigami, that wouldn't have ended well for anyone.
Unfortunately, in his hazy sleepy state, he forgot to switch out of phoenix state, so when he asked what was going on, it just came out as a series of whistles.

Marco switched to human, wearing a pair of bluebird boxers and quickly threw on a shirt and pants. He stifled a yawn with the back of his hand and gestured vaguely outside. "Is this a drinking occasion, or just a rooftop situation?" It was a rooftop situation either way because Marco needed the morning air to wake up the rest of his brain, but depending on how bad it was, alcohol would either make Ace fall off or feel better. Or worse. One of those.
"Kitten, what am I forgetting of clothes?" Sandals. He was barefoot, bedraggled, and looked about as awake as a snake in frigid winter. While he had managed to clip the belt and sash correctly, his shirt was also inside out. Oops.

when Ace just said 'everything', she knew what that meant. Just judging by his face said enough.
Grell stroked Ace's hair idly, because she was in that same boat before. Finding out abut your own death could be traumatizing, and yet liberating. The feeling of not knowing something most others did always made one paranoid.
She watched as Marco put on some clothes, with an inside-out shirt. Inspecting him, she nodded. "You seem to be alright." No, Marco, you need to learn how to wear shirts properly. This will be his first lesson.

Grell's fingers in his hair felt really nice and relaxing. It had been a long time since someone had done that for him. It drew a relaxing sigh from his tired body as he leaned back a little more into her touch. "Thanks for letting me steal him away for a bit Grell."

He gestured out the door for Ace and wearily led the way outside where they wouldn't have to fly, just climb someplace nice and secluded.
"So. Everything, eh?" His voice was monotone and stoic, but inside he was a bundle of knots. Ace's death? Pops death? Damn it Namur... he should have ordered the damn shark to keep shut!
But...
If it was all that, Ace was taking it well. Or maybe Marco was too tired to know the difference yet.

"Hmm..good as always. Different though..I don't think we've had this tea back home." Ace commented softly as he stared out into the distance. He was quiet for a while longer before he started talking.
"Everything...about the battle. About pops...about Jozu...about what Teach did to pops after he died...and about me. I...I didn't want to believe it. I still don't want to believe it. But it's all true isn't it?"
no subject
His stomach clenched as Ace explained the rest though. He wanted to throw up. Wow when Ace said everything, he pretty much meant it, huh.
Was it true? In which universe was the real question...
No, that was avoiding it. Which was exactly what Marco wanted to do. Feh.
Why would anyone come to Marco for the truth? He lied with gusto for a reason, after all. For fun, to protect people, just because. The truth was overrated so far as the phoenix was concerned. He didn't know how to answer Ace right away.
"Time... is squished to a point here. I met a version of you when I was first here who was a marine in our version of his world. Same snarky bastard you are, but for all that... a marine." It had driven Marco insane. To hear Ace who died protecting Luffy speak well of his own murderer?
"That's not... a question I can answer, Ace. I don't mean to give you unrealistic hope, but I thought for sure I'd never see Thatch again." He sipped more of the tea. "My son has come and gone from here four times. Espio's gone and come back two or three times, and one of the times, his whole section of the universe was destroyed." Is Ace dead? How can Ace ask that if he's there next to Marco breathing, drinking tea, and worrying about a future that might never come. Thatch...
Fuck. What was he to do with the lot of them?
"I told you, in my time, Pops is gone and I've become captain. If you were still in my world for that, I'd make you be captain, and you'd have to fight me forever to refuse that position."
Marco looked out the stars and took another sip of his tea. It would be morning soon, he expected. Sunrise. A new dawn for a discussion of a new era. But that period where it was still so dark out that every little light seemed to be the only one for all of eternity around them. Marco hated that time of day. Was it any wonder? It seemed much too like Blackbeard's hour. Dark. When the moon was set, and the sun had died. And Marco wasn't bright enough to match either of them. If Whitebeard was the moon, laughing and guarding, then Ace had always blazed like the sun, and Marco was a tiny speck of a star. A single sparkle in the endless black, and all he could try to do was to survive and protect the others. Exist for the others. Meh. It was still too early for even diurnal birds to be up and hunting.
"I can't take you back to my time, that is true. But does it matter? Will it change how you live here and now?"
no subject
"Is that why Thatch left the night I arrived? Because he knew I was going to die or had already died...and he was angry because I couldn't avenge him? I really fucked up Marco. And worse yet I got Pops killed. I don't deserve any kindness from you or Namur or Thatch. Not after what I did. I failed. I let the enemy win and the family down. Why would you ever even consider making ME your captain? I would just get you all killed or worse."
He set his cup down and hung his head in his hands. "I'm sorry Marco." He whispered as he broke again. Tears falling once more as the hatred for himself built up and bubbled out. Apparently he wasn't dealing with this as well as he thought he was. "I'm sorry I destroyed our family."
1/2
Fucking time man, how does it work? Miracles.

....
Apparently not.
Marco grabbed Ace by the beads to keep him from falling off the room and used his other hand to whack the kid upside the head.
"Excuse you?"
No wait, that was a bad start. "What the fuck did they do to you in prison? I thought Jimbei was with you. Did you both just decide to make some sort of bizarre suicide pact and ignore reality?!"
And that wasn't much better.
"Thatch left because he's an ever bigger moron than you are!" Another whack. "He blames himself for your death, idiot. He is sure as fuck not mad that you didn't avenge him. He's mad that I want to avenge you both, and he'd rather you'd lived. He's also being too much a coward to face the idea that it's his fault. Fuck you are both dumb as bricks. He's got hairspray leaking into his ears, and you're a D so I guess you have an excuse, but seriously. Destroyed the family?" Marco gave up whacking Ace and straight up punched him, fully intent on giving him a black eye.
"Get the fuck over yourself!"
Marco fumed quietly, his own thoughts racing to figure out how to adequately express himself and get through a skull that was actually that thick.
"You don't get it, do you? Moron. Fucking fucking moron." Marco dragged a palm down his face. "Before you say another dumbass word that insults everything we've been through, why do you think Pops and I said we ordered you to go? Why do you think we all came to get you? What the fuck makes you think you are anywhere near capable of hurting my family, much less destroying them? You tried to kill Pops hundreds of times, and you couldn't touch him. But now you think you're suddenly that strong? Don't you even dare."
no subject
"My inability to defeat Teach led to Pops death. You cannot deny that. It's fact. It happened. I was too cocky. I thought I could beat him but he was able to beat me instead. I love my family Marco and I didn't mean to piss you off.....I really did think it was my fault...all of it. But I guess...it's not...I really am worthless. Can't even apologize correctly anymore."
no subject
"Don't you ever, EVER call yourself worthless again!" Marco trembled, a mixture of rage and fear. With Ace's death the only consolation he thought he had was that Ace claimed his dream wasn't to be the King, but to have a family who cared about him. But that after all that he still found himself worthless?
Blue eyes flashed coldly with rage and Marco sent out a quiet haki-infused ping to alert Thatch and Namur to come stop him from hurting Ace more. "Why did you go fight Teach if you only regret it? Didn't you promise to live without regret? Should all of us regret not capturing you and forcing you to come back? Do not kid yourself little brat. You're fifty years too young to stop all of us. Had we been serious enough we could have forced you to come back. Are you saying now that we should have? Because if you do I will throw you off the roof for being an impostor of my brother."
Yeah..... he really needed to calm down and quickly. Or get Grell to hold him back. Someone.
He took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and regained some of his infamous composure, though the fury was still coursing through him. He was pretty sure it wasn't an impostor, after all. Only Ace could be this blindingly stupid.
Marco opened his eyes with a glare and growled, "I do not want your apologies, idiot. I do not want you to ever again disrespect the name of my family and brothers by thinking you alone could change our decisions and actions, or that you are somehow strong enough to break us."
Letting go of the beads, Marco pointed to his chest where the tattoo had been modified to a full circle. "Don't you get it? This means unbroken. Not by you, not by Teach, not by the whole damn world or the entire space-time continuum fucking up. No one can destroy my family. No one." He didn't leave Ace free for long though, and the hand went right back to grabbing the beads, his fist pushing up Ace's chin slightly to force him to look in Marco's eyes, blazing with fury as they were. "Why do you think we came to get you? To punish you? Do you really think we would ever choose to risk our lives, risk each other, risk everything for something that stupid?"
Another deep breath and Marco let go for real this time, fuming silently. "We didn't let you go alone because you were too cocky and so you fooled us. You are Ace. And apparently we've always known you better than you've known yourself." Marco flicked the freckled forehead. "Think about that for a bit before you say something even more stupid, eh."
He was still tempted to kick Ace off of the roof, but instead he simply scowled a little and thought furiously. "For the record dumbass, Teach wasn't able to kill Pops because of you. He was able to know the time and place because of the marines, but Pops was already dying. Pops has been dying for awhile. That's why I didn't go hunt the bastard down myself. Because I was scared of leaving Pops alone. Because if Pops died while I was gone I'd never have forgiven myself. So shut up about blaming yourself. Fuck, I'm so sick of everyone blaming themselves for shit out of control. Do you think you make the sun rise too?" Marco snorted irritably and laid on his back on the roof to just breathe.

He also didn't regret his decisions. He hated the outcomes, but he knew for a fact if given another choice he still would have done everything exactly the same. Ace was quiet for a very long time. Finally, he cleared his throat and whispered with a small smile on his face.
"You punch like a little girl." It seemed to be the only thing he could think of to say to diffuse the tension and let Marco know that he was going to be alright.
