Dinner for Two

Summary: Champloo has invited Pinkie Pie to dinner.

Perhaps the most interesting change to the massive basement kitchen was the temperature. Champloo had actually let the giant cauldron cool -- it wasn't going to waste, since he actually intended to prepare enough gazpacho to feed the entire school later -- and so no longer was kitchen hellishly hot. Beyond that, little else was different save for the desks being pushed aside and replaced with a table set with nice but certainly not fancy flatware, and the dishes midway through preparation in the particularly large over and several countertip stove burners Champloo reserved for his personal use.

Easy enough to tell when Pinkie was being polite, provided one was willing to accept her standards rather than apply societal ones. He smiled as he returned to his seat to join her in eating.

Champloo had not used any tricks or secret techniques on this salad. Its taste came purely from combining fresh, high-quality produce in flavorful proportions!

Pinkie reached over with the dressing bowl but paused before she did anything. "Do you want some?"

"I would like a little, yes, please." He held out a hand for it, smiling.

With that said, Pinkie gave him a smiley face, too, but without the circle. What a work of art!

"Is that enough?" She asked with a grin.

"A perfect amount," he said with a smile. "Though now I almost hate to eat it!"

Almost, which didn't stop him from doing so with evident happiness.

"If you don't I WILL!" She had enough room for both salads. Oh, he was eating it. Darn! Pinkie dug into her own salad with fervor, loving the mixture of greens. "What's the main course?! IS IT A SURPRISE?!"

"The true secret to a delicious meal is surprise!" Champloo said, pointing his fork at her for a moment. "It is not difficult to cook a meal that is tasty. What marks a truly wonderful dish is surprise at just HOW tasty it has proven to be!"

Pinkie chewed while raising an eyebrow. She had the courtesy to swallow before talking.

"What if it's only good to the person who made it?!"

Champloo frowned at the very thought. "Then it is not good! A chef must have a discriminating palate. The ability to identify and appreciate tastes is vital!"

"What if your...palate is..THAT?! I mean, if YOU think it's good for everyone else to eat, but not everyone likes it, isn't it still good?!" She could safely say that her own tastes differ from others.

"If you told a joke that made you smile, but hurt or upset others, would you think it was a good joke?"

If her tastes differed so much, she wouldn't be a girl who wanted to make others smile.

"Well, it depends on the joke and person! Not everyone likes jokes, no matter how silly they are!"

Pinkie wanted everyone to smile! But not everyone has a good sense of humor.

"That is true, and some tastes are not for everyone. But to make food that pleases only yourself and makes all others recoil is terribly nasty!"

Cooking was a process that did not end when the meal was cooked. Cooked food should bring delight to the eater!

Pinkie munched on some salad while Champloo chattered on. She swallowed before speaking again. "Well, yeah, I always do that! Or try to! Right?!" Oh, no she wasn't sure!

"You always try," he said with a firm nod. Don't doubt yourself, Pinkie! Dismissing his owl salad with a couple more bites, he rose. "Are you ready for the next course? Because it is ready for you!"

"It is?!" A dish that was ready for her! How neat! "BRING IT ON!" She can eat more salad later. All this time, she had been curious about what was the main course. Or...was it the main course?! OH THE ANTICIPATION! Pinkie fidgeted in her seat impatiently.

Champloo stepped over to the oven, and reaching inside (without pot holders. He was, after all, a demon), produced two large foil-wrapped oblongs. With a simple motion he slit open both with his claws, cutting through not only the foil but the skin of the potatoes beneath. With swift motions he added toppings from a wide selection of supplies on the counter, and faster than the eye could see, set the potato before Pinkie with a smile.

The toppings of choice: cranberries and brie cheese, with a little mayo to make it more creamy, and a scattering of pine nuts for crunch!

While Champloo was doing his specialty, Pinkie polished off more salad, peeking every now and then at what Champloo was doing. It was all so quick that she couldn't really tell how he did it all!

As she was leaning back, Pinkie stopped paying attention to just how far her chair was tilting back, and of course, it was too late before she started her backwards descent, arms flailing and all!

Hurriedly, Champloo reached out to catch her -- one hand on her outstretched wrist, one hand on her shoulder, the nearest places he could safely grab. "People, like ingredients, should not be dropped on the floor!" he quipped, with just a little hint of alarm under the calm simile.

She looked up at him, her face upside down, before smiling brightly to him. "MY HERO!!" Falling would have been painful, although she tended to be used to it. "Thanks, Chammy!"She kicked her legs to right herself. Not sure if that would work, but the effort is there!

"OOOOOOOOH! All this looks great!"

Ordinarily, Champloo preferred not to lie to himself. In this case, he was perfectly willing to make an exception and pretend that his heart hadn't skipped a beat when she smiled at him, upside-down, like that. Acknowledging it would accomplish nothing except raising a lot of questions and problems that would surely be awkward, difficult, and uncomfortable.

Aiding her in righting herself, he smiled as he rounded the table to his own seat. "As I said before, this is a new idea I thought I would try! Not the usual combination, but I think not a bad one."

Pinkie will give him all the smiles he wanted! Just don't have a heart attack! Don't worry, one day, she'll come to a realization that Chammy was the best thing since parties. In a non-friendship way.

"A NEW IDEA?!" What an honor this was! Pinkie took up her knife and fork and examined the dish from differing angles, trying to figure out the best way of sampling the food. "Lets try it out!" She cut into it and made sure to include all the toppings and berries in her bite. She munched with a look of concentration.

"HHHMMMMMMM..."

Champloo, personally, doubted that.. and despite being fairly genre-savvy, had no idea that his failure to express any sort of sentiment besides in the most vague ways could be contributing to the problem.

"That IS why I invited you down, you recall -- to try out the new recipes I am using!" For her, but.

...that might be why, Chammy.

Pinkie made a single sound similar to 'oooooooh, that's right' as she chewed before swallowing. Looking forward to his company, she forgot that part. Plus, lots of food to eat.

"It's really good! Do you think you can make a berry spread for it?" Because that would be awesome! She took more bites, humming happily at the flavors. "Hmm, maybe it wouldn't make the mayo stand out, though..." But it was so good!

"The mayo is primarily for creaminess," he said between bites. "A spread would require less to begin with, but I do not think it would be terribly missed."
