Summary: BEACH PARTY

Three days of sun, sand, and complete, unbridled fun--that was what Kiden had advertised, and she'd delivered. The slice of bright blue beach Nida had found for them stretched on one side into cliffs and a cove on the other, sheltered enough to be easily defensible but open enough not to make them targets. If they felt like exploring, well, the wildlife wasn't too much of a hassle, and apparently the jungle is lovely?

They had tents, food and drinks (lots of drinks) and plenty of other interesting things to last for the next three days--and Kiden, for one, was planning to make the most of it.

[Yukio's actually standing a ways away from the water in a t-shirt and board shorts, appearing, in all truth and honesty, a bit out of place. Frowning, he looks around, surveying the scene around him; his gaze lingers longer on the water's edge and the beach's borders--bikinis and bare skin aren't all that much of an attraction to him. As an instructor, he feels obligated to keep the students safe from whatever monsters may be lurking out there.

It's as his eyes wander the shoreline that he spots Vanille--the very reason why he's here in the first place. He wanders over to stand next to her, offering her a smile.]

How does it match up to your expectations?

[ Vanille spins at the sound of his voice and— well, immediately leans over to wrap her arms around him in a hug! Sorry, Yukio, it's the standard greeting. ] You came!

[ Before she answers his question, the obvious thing to do is to express how glad she is that he actually showed up. Not that she was expecting him not to, but, it didn't hurt to let him know she was happy he was here! ]

I think so! It looks just everyone just about done setting up, too. I guess the party will start in a bit. [ Not that she's worried so much about the party. She's interested in playing in the water! And the sand. And the everything. ]

[Yukio freezes as he feels her arms embrace him, and it takes him a long, awkward moment to finally return the gesture, patting her stiffly on the arm. If the warmth in his cheeks is anything to go by, he's probably looking a fair bit embarrassed as well.]

Ah--right, the party... [He glances over at the other people, quietly wondering how wild this thing is going to become, especially considering who had organized it. Like Vanille, Yukio's not all that interested.] Hopefully, it doesn't get too out of hand.

[ After he's patted her arm once, twice, she pulls back, still smiling up at him. Hugging is just a thing you do when your see your friends! She notices how embarrassed he looks, though, and giggles. Considering how serious and composed he can normally look, this is kind of funny! ]

Mm... Do you think it will? Everyone's just here to relax a little, right? [ Or so she thinks. ]

That's my hope... [He shoots her a worried look before adjusting it to look a little less serious.] There are always the troublemakers to look out for though.

[Still, he's just one guy--the number of cadets here far outstrips that of instructors. If they're sneaky enough, Yukio's not sure he'll catch them if they try anything.]

[ She can sense his worry— which is why she reaches for his hand, and gives it a squeeze, for confidence! ]

Just don't worry about it too much, okay? We're not at the school right now, so you don't have to worry as much as about the rules! Just try to have some fun! [ She didn't invite him along to make him worry, after all. ]

If you see anybody doing anything bad, you can just tell the DC later!

[Considering how he doesn't exactly put much faith in the disciplinary committee, Vanille's last words don't give him much confidence. That said, though, he does try to give her a warm smile to assuage her worries.

He'll just look like he's not concerned about things! Yes, that sounds like an excellent plan.]

Okay, okay... [He shakes his head, amused.] Did you have anything planned for this outing?

[ She can't say anything— since that's how she normally is, anyway.

Right now, though, she's 100% ready to give herself up to having a good time at the beach— and being with people she considers friends will make it even better! ]

Um... Not much. I was just going to swim, and maybe try catching some fish.

[Yukio turns a considering look out to the water, head tilting slightly to the side. He's never tried fishing right out of the ocean before. Come to think of it, he can't even remember the last he's even gone fishing period.

He finds it to be a bit of a shame that he has no fishing supplies with him now either.]

Did you fish a lot back home?

Um... Well, I used to! [ Fishing on Cocoon wasn't really a challenge, so it made her wonder if the fish there were even okay to eat. ]

Do you want to try? We could use— ah— [ Give her a moment! She turns around and ducks halfway into her and Hope's tent, and pulls out—

Her binding rod. ]

This!

[He fully expects her to reappear out of the tent with a fishing rod, not a... Well. He's not entirely sure what it is. He gives her a wavering smile and laughs.]

You're going to have to show me how that works. I've never seen anything like it before.

I can do that! It's... Kind of like a fishing rod... Only better! More hooks.

[ Which means more fish, if you're good. If you're bad, it means more flailing. But she's sure Yukio could get the hang of it just fine! ]

[He gives her a smile and gestures out toward the water.]

Let's see it in action then.

[...Because he certainly isn't going to give that thing a try without seeing her use it first!]

Alright!

[ Congratulations, Yukio! You've just won one (1) Vanille grabbing your hand and tugging you in the direction of the water! ]

Come on!

W-whoa!

[He lets himself get pulled along, doing his best not to stumble from her enthusiastic tugging.]

Slow down!

[But considering how broadly he's grinning, it probably doesn't matter all that much if she does.]

[ She does slow down, but, only when they reach the water. She giggles and releases him. ]

Hehe, sorry! But, now we've got to be... Really quiet, so we can sneak into the water. Okay?

[They're going to sneak into the water?

All the same, he drops his voice when he speaks.]

I thought we were going to use your... [Yukio gestures at the binding rod.] ...to fish.

[They aren't going to try to catch things with their hands, are they?]

We are! [ She's still whispering, but... It's an awfully loud and cheerful whisper. ] We need to get a little closer to the fish, though, since it can't cast out too far.

[ Catching them with their hands does sound fun, though. ]

[Yukio looks down at his feet, trying to see if he can spot any of these said fish they're trying to catch. Is this really going to work? After all, wouldn't the fish just... swim away if they saw them coming?

Well, Vanille is the expert here, so...]

How much further out?

Just... A... Little... [ She's tip-toeing now, unfolding her rod slowly. Once she thinks she's found a good distance, she stops and holds a hand out to catch Yukio before he moves forward. Really, there's no reason for them to be so cautious, considering how far out the fish are and how not far out they are, not to mention the fact that this is a beach...

Being sneaky was more fun, though! ] Okay...

One... Twoooooo... —three! Ah!

[ And there goes the rod! It casts out four lines that hit the water relatively easily. ]

And now we wait..!

[Following her example, Yukio tiptoes (why is he tiptoeing at a beach again?) after her. He comes to a stop when she holds out her hand and casts a look out toward the ocean and back to Vanille. Apparently, this is the magical distance that's perfect for fishing... ?

In any case, he turns and watches as she uses that odd weapon of her, eyes following the four lines that sail up and out.]

...And now we wait.

[He gives her a small but genuine smile.]

Yep! Waiting.

[ She smiles back, but then starts rocking back and forth on her heels. She's not very patient, but hopefully at least one fish will see the hooks dangling in the water and decide to take a bite.

And at least she had company while she waited. ] So, have you ever been fishing before this?

[Yukio settles his hands on his hips before he nods.]

I've been with my father and older brother a few times. [He smiles fondly.] It's been a long time since we've gone though.

[A pause and a soft laugh.]

I wasn't all that good at it.

You have a brother? [ She smiles, just ready to make idle conversation while they wait. The fish aren't biting just yet...

... Maybe she did something wrong. (Like not bait the hooks, for instance). ]

Well, no reason you can't try and get better at it now, huh? It's a good skill to have! You never know when you'll need to catch your own dinner...

You have a good point. [Yukio laughs--but not too loudly, what with the fishing in process--and nods his head.] And it would be something nice to show my brother whenever I see him again.

[A pause. He glances over at Vanille.]

We're twins, actually.
