Dinner for Two

Perhaps the most interesting change to the massive basement kitchen was the temperature. Champloo had actually let the giant cauldron cool -- it wasn't going to waste, since he actually intended to prepare enough gazpacho to feed the entire school later -- and so no longer was kitchen hellishly hot. Beyond that, little else was different save for the desks being pushed aside and replaced with a table set with nice but certainly not fancy flatware, and the dishes midway through preparation in the particularly large over and several countertip stove burners Champloo reserved for his personal use.

"Awww...that's too bad!" She liked his metaphors, even though sometimes they were hard to understand. She blinked at the seat being pulled out for her, since it wasn't often someone did that for her, but she sat down with a smile. "Thank you! What's the appetizer?"

"While it may seem odd to follow traditional for an untraditional guest, a double mushroom hamburger without its bun is simply dressed-up ground beef!" There's one, Pinkie; he can't keep them bottled up for long. Stepping back over to the stove, Champloo performed a few adjustments to the various delicious-smelling things simmering and baking, before turning his attention to one large pot. From it, he dished up two bowls of steaming soup, which he then carried over, setting them on the table with a grand bowing gesture.

"Hot and sour soup. An old favorite of mine, to start the evening off right!"

Champloo had, after all, planned an entirely vegetarian dinner.

Awwww! That was nice of him to do! Pinkie took in a big whiff and hummed in delight. "That smells super YUMMY! Do you have a name for this soup?" Pinkie took up a spoon and went right into eating, tasting the first spoonful to start and nodding her head in approval.

"It is not so different from ordinary hot and sour soup that it deserves a special name in my mind," he said, joining her. If he partook of the soup faster than she did, it was to return to the task of cooking in a timely fashion. But he watched her closely; after all, taste was a sense, a perception. It required a person to do the tasting.

"...so you DON'T have a NAME?!" Oh, Chammy, she expected much more than that! "Can I name it?! PRETTY PLEASE?!"

"Pinkie," he said, unable to hide a broad smile, "if you feel that my dishes are delicious or distinct enough to deserve a name, then I am honored." And he meant that.

She did a fist pump in victory!

"WOOO!!" She'll have to get started on those names! "Thanks, Chammy! You'll be AMAZED at my names!"

"Pinkie," he said quite warmly, lifting his near-empty bowl as if in a toast, "you never fail to amaze."

On that sentiment, he drank off the last of the soup, then rose. The next course was due!

The first taste of the soup was yummy, and Pinkie didn't notice the spiciness just yet. Oh, were they supposed to finish their soup already? Pinkie was still pretty bad at manners, and wasn't sure if she should finish or not, so...

She chugged down the rest of the soup.

It was extremely spicy in such a large amount and NOT A GOOD IDEA.

Pinkie practically breathed fire as she made an alarming sound. Something like a fire alarm going off and screaming.

"WATER! WATERRRRRRRR!!" In her state of panic, she ran around the unfamiliar kitchen (despite being there so often, she sure cannot find that water) for a beverage.

Oh dear. Champloo had expected her to have a higher tolerance for spiciness than that!

His first though was to punch the spice oil into subdued blandness! ...but Pinkie probably wouldn't appreciate that, even if he could do it without causing her any harm. Instead, he hurried over to his oversize refrigerator and punched the side of it with the side of his fist. The door popped open just as a pitcher of juice fell into his hand. This he quickly poured into a glass to offer Pinkie.

No! Spiciness BAD!

Pinkie stopped in front of him and snatched the juice from his hands. She chugged it down quickly and...was that steam coming from her mouth? Who knows. Pinkie panted heavily, hands on her knees as she relaxed after all that running.

"Thank....you...Chammy..."

"Now I may perhaps have cause to dread the name you give my food," Champloo said lightly, touching a hand to her shoulder. "But the next course will take the edge off. Sit and I shall serve it!"

Pinkie looked to Chammy warily.

"It...isn't spicy, right?" Because she could do without a repeat of that soup!

"Just the opposite! The next course is the salad course!"

He had already done most of the work on this beforehand, so now from the fridge he produced a large bowl and several smaller ones. With quick motions he emptied the vegetables from the smaller bowls into the lettuce, then with a pair of forks tossed the salad so high it almost reached the ceiling!

"WWWWOOOOOWWWW..." Pinkie watched in awe at how high the salad could get! "It's like it has WINGS!"

"I apologize for not having this prepared, but I realized I did not know your taste! Which dressing do you favor, Pinkie?"

With one final toss, he deftly swapped out the large bowl for two glass salad bowls, into which the descending roughage plummeted. It was indeed an impressive salad, combining many vegetables into one lovely serving.

"What flavors do you have?!" Pinkie was sneaking a finger or two to snatch up one of the veggies in the salad.

Prepared for this, Champloo tosses a cucumber slice up in an easy arc for her to catch -- in her hands or her mouth, he didn't insist on one or the other. "Many, many kinds, of course! But if I may make a recommendation, perhaps the honey mustard?"

Alright!! Pinkie easily placed herself beneath the cucumber and caught it with her mouth! "HOLE IN ONE!" They should just eat salad like this!

"I don't think I tried that before! Let's give it a go!"

Champloo dropped the two bowls onto the table, then from seemingly nowhere produced a bowl of thick, creamy dressing. "Season lightly and to taste! Would you care for pepper?"

"No, I would not!" Hopefully that was polite enough. Who knows. Pinkie took the bowl and drizzled some of the dressing onto her salad in a nice little pattern resembling a smiley face.

Easy enough to tell when Pinkie was being polite, provided one was willing to accept her standards rather than apply societal ones. He smiled as he returned to his seat to join her in eating.

Champloo had not used any tricks or secret techniques on this salad. Its taste came purely from combining fresh, high-quality produce in flavorful proportions!

Pinkie reached over with the dressing bowl but paused before she did anything. "Do you want some?"

"I would like a little, yes, please." He held out a hand for it, smiling.

With that said, Pinkie gave him a smiley face, too, but without the circle. What a work of art!

"Is that enough?" She asked with a grin.
